The Lower Forty of Hill Country
"Second, I have always mused on why the line occurs so often in blues, "when I woke up this morning." The lyric almost defines a genre of its own."
Sleep provides a temporary respite from the troubles of this world. Conversely, when one wakes he or she is brought face-to-face with those troubles which may include:

I had a fight with my woman/man.

My woman/my man won't love me.

My woman/my man has left me.

I love a woman/man who doesn't love me.

I'm broke.

I haven't got anything to drink.

I've had too much to drink.

My dog is sick.

My dog left me for another.

My dog died.

Nobody loves me.

(Add your own troubles below...)

Hugh Laurie, Albert King, A.C Reed, Muddy Waters, and Junior Wells are some favorites of mine. Been playing guitar since I was 6 years old. Mess around with harmonica, dulcimer, and drums a bit as well.

I had a chance to see BB King many years ago at this small club in Seattle. We had the only bad seats in the house (there was a large post between our table and the stage). After intermission BB King was walking through the audience and stopped by our table. He looked around the post a little bit then sat in the chair next to me (my buddy was going to the bathroom). He looked at the post and looked around it to the stage then said something, "Aw you have a terrible view...I'm sorry." of course we're all stunned that he sat down with us so I think our mouths were all agape still. Eventually he gets up but asks us if we want him to play anything. I said "The thrill is gone." He winked (at least I think he winked) and said "Son, you're too young for that." Then he got on stage and and dedicated that song to the young guys at the crappy table.
I love blues but like all music the mood has to be right.
