I use a Zippo pipe insert too however I find the flame always goes right to the center of the bowl, meaning it's harder to light the edges. Do you guys find this issue? The regular Zippo insert seems to allow for better control.
You just move it around a little side to side as with any lighter. Personally I find them easier.

I’m having a tough time visualizing how this works. Anyone willing to post a pic of what you are describing?
If you are right handed, grasp the lighter as you normally would, with the trigger to the right. Now, turn the lighter 180 degrees in your hand so that the trigger is facing left. Stroke the wheel with your thumb and when you bring the lighter to your pipe the trigger is away from you.

I use Bics.
But I have a different method.
I hold it sideways and use my index finger to strike it. I've never been burned......probably.
