I think it's fair to say that among the manifold pleasures of pipe smoking, one of the joys is the opportunity to own and use these amazing pieces of practical sculpture.
Some guys can afford any pipe at the show, some guys can manage a couple or three basket pipes a year, but I'm guessing that for all of us, on whatever level we can afford it, acquiring a new pipe is a pleasure. (Or an affliction, as in PAD.)
But whatever your pipe buying level -- what's your "white whale," the ne plus ultra, the sine qua non? What is the pipe you reasonably figure you'll never actually own -- because of rarity, or cost, or whatever -- but would most like to acquire? Maybe it's some amazing maker. Maybe it's something historical. Maybe it's that pipe your Uncle Early used to smoke when you wee visiting.
For me there are a couple categories for pipes I'll likely never own, but to which I can aspire:
I would love to own and smoke a pipe with real, meaningful historic provenance -- the pipe Einstein smoked waiting to be called up to accept the Nobel; the pipe Twain puffed while writing a Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court; the pipe Monty used to settle his nerves before El Alamein -- that sort of thing.
The (only slightly) more attainable dream pipe would be anything by Poul Ilsted. Given that he makes only a few score pipes a year, is spotted about as often as Big Foot, and sells his pipes for what a decent used car costs -- if assuming he will sell one to you at all -- I might be more likely to get the historical pipe. But my goodness, the man makes beautiful things.
Here is his page on Pipedia.

This one. J.R.R. Tolkiens pipe. Would a bit of his genius be in it?

Bo Nordh made a briar calabash with removable bowl. It had a special system built into the bottom of the bowl. That is my dream pipe! Actually I would settle for one of his elephant foot pipes but my dream is still the calabash.

Ah C.S. Lewis.........Another genius who, inspires my phylisophical ideology. I couldn't find a pic of his pipe only him smoking one that is hidden by a mighty puff of smoke.

I dream each new, with Kaywoodies dancing betwixt my ears, and wake each day, pleased to see what few I have awaiting, steady and bold, in my rack.

I would say this $28,000 Teddy Knudsen is out of my range for the foreseeable future.
I screen-capped it to preserve it as someone might buy it soon and then it will be gone. What's odd is that I couldn't find a way to navigate to it on the site. Greg Pease emailed me the url.

My dream pipe would be this exact pipe but without the rustication, it would be smooth black with a mirrored finish

One day I hope to be able to afford one of Bo Nordhs pieces, or one of the freehands made by japanese masters, either Gotoh-san or Tokutomi-san.

That $28k monstrosity frightens me, could you take it on an airplane, or would they consider it a weapon? All kidding aside, it has some amazing grain though!

I aspire to have a 264 shape from every single Peterson line.

Claudio Cavicchi carved a (5C) pipe with a perfectly round bowl the size of a baseball with a short-wide quarter bent oval stem. I wish I had a photo... Smooth finish with some very tight very straight grain like a 1" belt around the equator and nothing but beautiful birds eyes above and below... Some lucky fellow beat me to it by one day... :crying:
I have never recovered......

I would love to have the Kaywoodie my dad smoked during 1969 in Vietnam. The pipe had a hole burned completely through the bottom. In current production, I would have to say a Dunhill billiard.
