Captain Black White has the quintessential American pipe tobacco smell and Prince Albert is probably the most identifiable American pipe tobacco brand of all time.

This gets my vote

In my mind, regardless of what's considered what, a true American blend would be one containing any or all amounts of Virginias, Burleys, Kentucky Dark Fired, Perique, and absolutely nothing else. Very little or no flavoring and a good kick of nicotine. Stout, strong, and very slightly sweet. US grown and blended. Something you can smoke while you stand on picket duty along the Rappahannock before marching straight into the guns.
Good Lord man.... I would love to find something like this. Surely it’s out there. Any suggestions?
ODF maybe?

chilipalmer names a lot of the prime picks. I know there are others. I know it's not just one or a dozen. I think either a burley or Virginia base is a good start, and some black Cavendish is usually a strong signal. I think of a blend similar to PC's Log Cabin, or an English blend that includes burley, and aromatics that are distinctly tobacco forward like Edward G. If it smokes well in a cob, that's another signal. You sort of know it when you smoke it, and many blends qualify.

Potlach is the most American I can think of. Ironically it smokes best for me in my English Falcon pipe. Peretti's Cuban mixture is on my short list of blends to try.

+1 for both Edward G Robinson’s pipe blend and SPC Potlatch. I’d throw Haunted Bookshop along with Carter Hall and Prince Albert in there as well.

You have to appreciate the irony there.

Old Joe Krantz is close...minus the KDF.
EDIT: actually perhaps it does also have KDF...not really sure about that. But I know I love it.

First, I have to chuckle at what Brian said. :) For me it's hard to narrow down, but in the main I agree with chili. If I had to cut it to 3 I'd have to say SWA, CBW, & London Dock (more irony, but still serious & accurate).
