The Acolyte on Disney+

Have you ever watched a show that was so perfectly realized with complex layered characters, brilliant insightful dialogue, entertaining plotting, etc, that you were completely drawn into its world? Well, that ain't The Acolyte, the newest Star Wars series, which debuted today on Disney+.

Dead is the best description of this boring slough of a show. The leaden dialogue lacks any life whatsoever. Even by Star Wars standards it is brain dead. The characters are equally flat, lifeless and uninteresting. By the end of the second episode I was praying for them to all suddenly die so that the series would be ended. No such luck.

Some of you may enjoy the fight sequences, which are rehashings of various martial arts tropes with a bit of Jedi mogo mixed in. They're predictable and boring as well.

The visual effects work far outshines the other elements of this ossified turd of a show, and that's a problem. As George Lucas stated, "there's nothing more boring than a visual effect". And because there's no other life in The Acolyte, the FX are pretty much all there is.

In my opinion Star Wars died with the Ewoks and from then on it was just scratching the bottom of the pot to generate money. With some exceptions like Rogué One or the first season of The Mansalorian, everything else has been purely and exclusively created to generate money. Not even George Lucas has respect for his own creation. It is unfortunate.

The only hope is to stop treating art like a franchise. Nothing good comes from that approach. I don't know what the agenda is.

Just a side note: Sci-Fi fans. Run, dont walk from Atlas. Yes Jlo still thinks she can act. If it were a move and she happened to be a character in the film it just might be ok. The problem is that aside from bad writing she is front and center constantly. It was so terrible I had to turn it off and I didnt set the bar very high before I started.

The problem I find with all these modern shows is that they copy badly what has been done before showing they didn't understand the first version or they try to add something (we can do it better) that is wholly inappropriate to the plot or they are trying to make a statement that has nothing to do with the time period or story or they are out to ridicule something that others like. There seems to be little creative imagination anymore. I avoid most of it. The old literature which did things first often did it better and more thoughtfully despite advancements in technology. Lucas turned over all his rights when he sold the IP to Disney, so he has not real say about what they do. So far, I've enjoyed the Mandelorian, except for the most recent season which I thought weakly developed, and Andor. The rest of it has been mostly retreads, or WAY too serious and self reverential for me. Disney has made a complete and utter mess of the IP.
I don't fault them for making money. They're a business. They're supposed to make money. But how about offering something other than tired crap in exchange for money.

I hate to be that guy, but this has always been a franchise whose primary reason for existing is to sell toys to kids. Disney these days is a soulless abattoir where imagination is turned into a tasteless mass-produced paste. But this series has been deeply shitty well before Disney came into the picture. I understand the original movies hold a special place in popular culture, and SW has a dope aesthetic, but beyond that, this has always been a mediocre franchise at best.

Saw the writers and directors praising that it was the most inclusive work ever done by Disney. I mean good luck to them and they should make what they want but at some point you have to take you’re paying customers in mind.

I think the real problem is they aren’t making money, they are losing literally billions of dollars with the dreck they are producing.

How much did they have to pay you off to give such a glowing review?
Seriously though sometimes I watch a show or movie and I really wonder if the writers and director were not just realized from a basement for the first time since their birth. Or to put it another way, how could they write that dialog and also have talked with more then four human beings?

Never believe what the writers and directors say. They're reading from the script they're told to read from if they want another job. I have no problem with diversity, since it's been brought up, as long as it doesn't override competence. The problem is that many very competent people, including myself, have been denied opportunities rather more often than incompetent people being upraised to fill a metric.

All that said, it does seem that a merger between Boeing and Disney would be appropriate on some level, probably the lower levels of hell.

Exactly i don’t care who is gay or whatever race i just want an entertaining story. That’s too much to ask for.
