I am a fan of all things '40s. My parents grew up in the '30s and 40s, and I am well aware that it wasn't all good, but it's an era that has always appealed to me.
How can anyone not like an era where pipe smoking was commonplace?

You didn't have to be a hipster to wear a fedora?

A time when automobiles (with bench seats mind you) could fit a family of 8 (and gas cost .18 cents a dollar):

And the music sounded like this:

I absolutely love the 40's. They were a trying times of course, but it was certainly one of those points in history that will always stand out. Men were Men, and Women were Women, we had work, and industry was booming from the war. It is something, sadly, that we may never see again in our time. It was worth it for the music alone; no one can stand up to Glenn Miller, the Andrew Sisters, and Benny Goodman. And let us not forget about the ladies of the time, if it weren't for those Bombshell Babes and Pistol Packing Mama's, our boys overseas would have had it a lot harder than they did. They truly are our greatest generation.

Six you nailed it, my favorite period in time was the 40's, the cars were cool, the music was cool, the movies were cool, just everything about it was cool, then you had this guy

[/img] the coolest man the 40's could have, both an amazing singer and actor as well as a pipe smoker what could be better.

But better not be black, or Jewish, or...
True, but this could be said of almost anytime in the past (and even today).
For me, the 1940s was the last great age of style. In some ways it was over-the-top, but still, it was a more subdued style when compared to the '50s.

There are certain aspects of each decade that I find interesting, if only I had a time machine...

Meant to agree with you on that - Bing was the man back in the '40s - and a pipe smoker to boot.

Not so sure about this. There was a world war raging from 1940-1945 followed by a pretty serious recession when the war ended. Late in the era we got paranoid about nuclear war and the Red Scare.
The music was wonderful, though, and the star system was in full bloom in Hollywood. TV also got rolling then.
