That Time of the Year

It's Christmas time and no one has mentioned that time honored favorite delicacy we all wait for all year...fruit cake. I for one actually love the stuff, along with my family, and am on the last 2 pounds of the eight pounds I got this year. My grandparents made it homemade and I have yet to attempt making this holiday tradition myself. It's a love hate thing, I know, so this should make for some interesting comments.

Some I enjoy a lot, some not. If it's moist with plenty of fruit and nuts, I most often like it.

I’ve made Alton Brown’s fruitcake a few times. One time I planned enough ahead to soak the fruits in rum for a few months. Good stuff.

I LOVE fruit cake. Especially if doused with cognac and left a few months got the flavours to meld.

With a glass of old (20+ yo) Australian muscat or muscadelle - both of which tastes like liquid fruitcake.

My wife makes apple or banana sponge cake. But the fruitcake sounds delicious. There is a liqueur that is widely used for cakes or sponge cakes. I remember my mother used to make a chocolate and vanilla cream cake with muffins and soak the muffins in this liqueur.

Love it more when you pop a tin and get that heavy fruitcake smell from pipe tobacco.

But yes, love fruitcake, with lots of milk.

My mom used to make a dark fruitcake and a light fruitcake every year. I liked the light one - the dark one not so much. Both my grandmothers also used to make fruitcake as well. I feel like it’s a bit of a dying tradition (at least in my family).

I'm blessed that I've never been so hungry that Burger King tastes good.

Store-bought, not so much. But I LOVE a good homemade one.
My English Grandmother used to make them from scratch around Easter and age them until Christmas, dousing them with brandy every month or so................ Man, that was mighty fine eating.
She made mince pies also, for the Holidays and I loved them too...........
I haven't had a mince pie in ages....................

I believe the dark uses molasses
