That Time I Bought 5 Danes & A Vintage Dunhill

Just went in to buy a couple ounces of bulk tobacco and got distracted by the small case with estate pipes.

3x Ken Erickson freehands, a beautiful Larson, an unknown to me massive plateau freehand and a vintage Dunhill.

I’m guessing someone sold off their collection of Danish pipes and I just happened to stumble across them.

I thought the three Erickson pipes were Danish but some research found he was an American making pipes in the 1960s & early 70s from California. I just couldn’t leave those pipes behind even though I hadn’t heard of him before. The grain and design just screamed for me to adopt them! Glad I did!

The Larson is stamped Handmade in Denmark Selected Grain.

Feather light pipe, and really nice grain. The forward cant on the bowl is fascinating to me.

The Dunhill is a group 2, shape 315 Root Briar from 1972. Smaller than most of my other Dunhills but the shape is a classic! Very lightly smoked too.

The real puzzler is that massive fan shape double plateau pipe. The only markings are a stylized pipe followed by a “W”. Seems like I’ve read about a similar logo or stamp here before but I just can’t find the reference. Maybe someone will know? That one is waaay outside my normal wheelhouse but it was just to nice to leave behind and the prices were ridiculously low on all of them.

And yes, I did remember to buy some bulk tobacco (6 oz of G&H Dark Flake) and several packages of cleaners. ?

I've done the exact same thing, walking in to a pipe store to get pipe cleaners and walk out with three new pipes!

Looks like a JHW to me. I've got one of his pipes. I'll add the pipedia/pipephil link in a few minutes if nobody beats me to it. Nice haul.
