I’ve just brought back a beautiful Ben Wade Golden Walnut that I only thought I’d cleaned when it arrived this summer.
To be restored to excellent smoking condition:
1. Every trace of any cake must be scraped down to bare briar. Imagine it’s a dinner plate or skillet. Not any cake, can be in the chamber to sour the smoke.
2. The shank and stem must be so clean inside a white pipe cleaner soaked in Everclear comes through white.
3. I use Everclear and cotton balls, but you must draw all the stink from the briar.
4. In order to sate your lust for pretty things the pipe must be oiled with grapeseed oil before smoking. It’s only in your head, but it’s there. Make the pipe look nice.
5. There will be a short period needed to break in the pipe again. Use mild tobaccos.
Keep it clean, after that.
