MM965 is a staple in all of my Upshalls.
I just cracked open a tin of Nightcap and forgot how overpowering it can be, it is not nearly as well balanced as 965.
I do have a few tins of London Mixture but have not yet tried that blend.
I also love Princes Street and a few pounds gets me thru a year, I'm due for a reload soon. Princes Street is also to me, a very well balanced blend.
I smoked a good bit of LEO over the summer, it is a completely different blend than Princes Street, but good in it's own, mostly VA way. A nice change of pace for me, but not a lat-heavy blend that I associate with most English blends.
Enjoy lighting up that Upshall for the first time!

Small amounts of Latakia and more tasteful of Virginia's and Orientals would be L J Peretti's Tashkent. It's a staple in my rotation.

And for an American Blend with a little Latakia which is not pronounced in flavor that has Burley and Virginia components, it's pretty hard to beat L J Peretti's Blend 9575.

Those are two that are all day smokes IMO. and I'll gladly break in any pipe with those.

So now you have enough recommendations in all of these posts to really do a number on your wallet!!

I love love love McClelland's #5150 dark full english, it's what got me into pipe smoking. Mainly dark stoved Va makes up the dark look of it. It's a really tasty blend.

+1 for Nightcap. I have smoked Early Morning Pipe and 965 and I feel Nightcap is head and shoulders above the both of them in my humble opinion. Smokes great....huge nicotine bonus.....incredible, complex, flavors.
I am finishing up a tin of Squadron Leader right now and it has grown on me about a month after opening. It was a little wet upon my initial dive in and truly is 100% better 30 days after first being exposed to the atmosphere. I would have 2 star'd it week one...now it's a 3....not an overly enthusiastic 3...but nonetheless....

How about Sutliff Blend 5? Has anyone tried that one? It's gotten some good reviews on some retail sites,

and there's a good discount on it at P&C right now. I'm interested in roth's comments on having gotten to enjoy

Latakia blends less. Maybe I'll do a thread on that. I love my Lat blends, but I make a point of rotating them

with gentler Virginias and aros which are mostly based on Virginias and Burleys. In any case, the question is,

has anyone tried Sutliff Blend 5, and have you enjoyed it?

followed by their blend #973 Cordial,

the Dunhill Lodon Mixture.

tennsmoker,
Any update on your Upshall and the English blends you've tried in it?
My Tilshead lovat, which started out smoking Englishes and then moved on to VAs only, is now a firm smoker of British flakes -- Ennerdale, Stonehaven, Coniston Cut Plug, Kendal Flake, etc. I suspect it will enjoy Warrior Plug, St. Bruno and others of a similar type. I guess it finally realized its true English identity -- not fancy "English" blends, but the flakes long favored by British smokers, especially the British working class.

Pitchfork and others who have contributed to this thread:
Ok, I have been waiting to write this.
I kicked off my beautiful Upshall 1986 Billiard Liverpool with some very old Dunhill 965 that I had been saving for a special occasion.
The 965 is more than a decade old and was just absolutely sublime, though the can was rusting a bit.
I purchased this can on the Bay a long time ago, paid waaaay too much for it, but it was delicious and worth the wait for the right pipe!
BTW, for all you Southern folk out there, 965 was William Faulkner’s favorite when he purchased expensive tobaccos. Mostly, he was a PA smoker.
I followed up the 965 with The Frog Morton series, especially FM Cellar, which I love. I ran some old FMOTT and FMOTB through the Upshall before heading to my go-to right now, the FM Cellar. Then I moved on to Jubilee and 3 Oaks Syrian.

Next, came Westminster, Sextant, Odyssey and Chelsea Morning from the Master.
Lastly, just this morning, some Peterson's Old Dublin.
My next launch will be our other tobacco genius, Russ Ouellette’s excellent series of English tobaccos.
One quick word about my experiment. It has been a real eye-opener for me, since I last concentrated on English blends alone. I loved English blends in the past, but had gotten away, preferring more Va and Vapers lately.
But returning to a heavy diet of English has reawakened something in me. Maybe it is memory, or as Nabokov wrote: memory is speaking to me, as he said, “One is always at home in one's past...”
The Upshall is a marvelous pipe and just plain smokes!
I have had pipes that smoked really well from the get-go (Ashtons constructed by Mr. Bill Aston-Taylor come to mind), but this Upshall is just really wonderful.
When I save up a few more bucks, I plan to purchase another. It is that good.
And then, on to the other fine English blends recommended in this thread.
You guys are the best!

William Faulkner’s favorite

I heard that Faulkner was partial to Blue Boar, now long gone.
As to the original question, I would vote for Squadron Leader, Old Dublin, and Sherman's 536. All solid, middle-of-the road, English blends.
