Okay, this is going to sound crazy but here goes:

Last year I tried C&D's Bayou Night and loved the stuff. In particular, it had a funky, distinctly manure-like tone to it that reminded me of driving through country backroads as a teenager. Delicious.

A strange thing to enjoy, admittedly. Inexplicable attraction. Maybe a little disgusting, even. Call it a guilty pleasure.

Embarrassed, I jarred the ounce and left it untouched for a while to consider my unnatural impulse for a poop-smelling treat. But the cravings didn't end...indeed, they began to outweigh my shame.

This week I decided to crack open that ol' jar once again and dive in. Alas! I was met with grave disappointment: my precious Bayou Night no longer held the aroma of cow shite.

Was it the aging process? Had my senses changed somehow? I may never know.

Can anyone here relate to this disturbing reaction to Bayou Night? And more importantly, does anyone know of another blend out there that has this incredible, funky, savory poo aroma and taste?

Many of the tins of Cornell & Diehl Anthology 2022 have a very pronounced eau de barnyard fragrance, so much so that for more than 2 years it was difficult for me to even open the tin. However, after 2 plus years the tin note is still pungent but the smoke is truly great. Hard to find a tin but perhaps someone might sell or trade with you.

Thank you kindly. I'm compiling a list from the responses here.

If I understand it correctly, Latakia is cured by hanging the leaves over burning camel or cow dung. If that aroma really turns you on, load up a few pipes and drive to the nearest cattle farm and have a happy. If you ask nice, the farmer would probably let you load up a few buckets of cow pies to take home with you.

Just means one of your great-grandpappies was a werewolf. Got that poop-craving dog blood in ye.

Don't touch silver, and consider investing in some manure-smelling perfume to spritz on before piping, so you can always have the barnyard essence you crave from whatever blend you smoke.

As a fan of C&D, and someone who has grown and processed his own leaf, I have no idea why so many C&D products have that initial shite aroma. I smell it mostly upon opening a fresh tin, but thank goodness it doesn’t translate into the taste or aroma of the burning leaf. And, it does go away after it has decanted a bit.

Same for McClelland’s ketchupy smell. It dissipates and doesn’t translate into the flavor.

A few weeks ago, I smoked Quiet Nights and then a bowl of Kendal #7 immediately afterward. After I went inside, the smell on my hands and shirt was like cow crap--not the well-behaved pasture scent, but full-on dairy barn antibiotic-laden cow diarrhea. Never had anything like it, before or since, and I hope I never do again.
Do you have any you want to get rid of?

Consider this "most helpful" review of C&D Star of the East: https://www.tobaccoreviews.com/blend/2766/cornell-diehl-star-of-the-east-flake/?review=25956

To Quote:

"Highly recommended to all who like an unsavory quality in the things they savor."

A sentence that speaks to your interests so beautifully!

There's also Merde de Cheval. But I think we lost that one in the Sutliff closure.

To guess on the how and why, I think the scent of 4-Methylphenol is what you're after. A single molecule that's produced in both burnt wood and animal guts. I think it's coming from the Latakia in all three of these blends. It looks like the chromatograms in this study confirm that Cyprian Latakia has it in spades (see page 6, figure 2). And also (as if it were speaking exactly to your question!) figure 3 suggests the same molecule somehow dissipates or degrades over days of storage in a glass jar.

Also, the same paper notes Cyprian Latakia is smoked over mastic. So, it's probably not fumigated with burning animal dung. But that won't stop us from thinking it is, eh lads?
