One of my favorites. I definitely embody the army description.

Military rules, by Service

Marine Corps Rules:
1. Be courteous to everyone, friendly to no one.
2. Decide to be aggressive enough, quickly enough.
3. Have a plan.
4. Have a back-up plan, because the first one probably won't work.
5. Be polite. Be professional. But, have a plan to kill everyone you meet even your friends…
6. Do not attend a gunfight with a handgun whose caliber does not start with a "4."
7. Anything worth shooting is worth shooting twice. Ammo is cheap. Life is expensive.
8. Move away from your attacker. Distance is your friend. (Lateral & diagonal preferred.)
9. Use cover or concealment as much as possible.
10. Flank your adversary when possible. Protect yours.
11. Always cheat; always win. The only unfair fight is the one you lose.
12. In ten years nobody will remember the details of caliber, stance, or tactics. They will only remember who lived.
13. If you are not shooting, you should be communicating your intention to shoot.

Navy SEAL's Rules:
1. Look very cool in sunglasses.
2. Kill every living thing within view.
3. Adjust speedo.
4. Check hair in mirror.

US Army Rangers Rules:
1. Walk in 50 miles wearing 75 pound rucksack while starving.
2. Locate individuals requiring killing.
3. Request permission via radio from "Higher" to perform killing.
4. Curse bitterly when mission is aborted.
5. Walk out 50 miles wearing a 75 pound rucksack while starving.

US Army Rules:
1. Curse bitterly when receiving operational order.
2. Make sure there is extra ammo and extra coffee.
3. Curse bitterly.
4. Curse bitterly.
5. Do not listen to 2nd LT's; it can get you killed.
6. Curse bitterly.

US Air Force Rules:
1. Have a cocktail.
2. Adjust temperature on air-conditioner.
3. See what's on HBO.
4. Ask "what is a gunfight?"
5. Request more funding from Congress with a "killer" Power Point presentation.
6. Wine & dine 'key' Congressmen, invite DOD & defense industry executives.
7. Receive funding, set up new command and assemble assets.
8. Declare the assets "strategic" and never deploy them operationally.
9. Hurry to make 13:45 tee-time.
10. Make sure the base is as far as possible from the conflict but close enough to have tax exemption.

US Navy Rules:
1. Go to Sea.
2. Drink Coffee.
3. Deploy Marines

ssjones, strong family resemblance there, a great photo. Your pappy looks ready to rumble in his combat gear. My dad was the skipper of several YMS minesweepers in the Philippines during WWII, so though I was a lowly enlisted guy in the Navy (everyone wanted to get into officer training, and I tried but didn't make it) trained as a radioman, I asked for a minesweeper assignment on my "dream sheet," and was duly assigned to one, the USS Gallant MSO 489. So I always joke that my dad and I were a minesweeping dynasty. I spent months on patrols off Danang and up further north near the demilitarized zone, laughingly-called. Instead of making port, we took on supplies by underway replenishment from an oiler. Endless sea stories to tell.

Amid all the political rancor that dominates the public discourse and news cycles, we should remind others of the following observation from Army veteran Charles M. Province:

It is the Soldier, not the minister, who has given us freedom of religion.
It is the Soldier, not the reporter, who has given us freedom of the press.
It is the Soldier, not the poet, who has given us freedom of speech.
It is the Soldier, not the campus organizer, who has given us freedom to protest.
It is the Soldier, not the lawyer, who has given us the right to a fair trial.
It is the Soldier, not the politician, who has given us the right to vote.
It is the Soldier who salutes the flag,
Who serves beneath the flag,
And whose coffin is draped by the flag,
Who allows the protester to burn the flag.
At one point in their lives, all veterans have written a blank check made payable to “The People of the United States of America” for an amount up to and including their lives.

To genuinely demonstrate gratitude for our military veterans and those still serving, Patriots who have and continue to defend the Liberty we enjoy, here is my suggestion: Strive to be, first and foremost, an American citizen worthy of their sacrifice.

I'm not sure my thoughts/feelings can be articulated any better than what Bengel has done here, so I won't try.

To all those who have served, a sincere thank you.

I was working in Virginia today, just outside DC so I took the time to get over to the Arlington National Cemetery.

While heading to my franchise location in the AM, near Ft. Belvoir, I stopped beside a trailer for the Old Guard, which was pretty cool.

After my meeting, I went over the ANC. Since it was a holiday, traffic around DC was very light. I was surprised to find almost no one at the cemetery. Their app for finding the gravesite wasn't working, but I finally found it. I was struck by how many new graves were in that area, compared to interment in Feb 2019. Arlington is not doing grave burials much these days, so that was even more sobering. The nearby Collumburial (wall interment for urns) must be exploding as well. And you can see they keep preparing new grounds. An emotional afternoon, but worth the effort.

And as a nod to my Infantryman father, my feet were soaked! (dress shoes...) Seemed fitting.

I'm so happy to hear that you got to visit your father today. Hallowed ground for sure. I don't know that I can add anything more profound than what has already been stated in this thread, but I am thankful for those who put their lives on the line for our freedoms.
