As a collector of old britwood and of the old Comoy's rhodesians, I have turned my nose up at the new "Comoy's" pipes simply assuming that they are a mere shadow of their former selves...not worthy of the name. However, today I saw the SP banner on the site today and it had "12 fresh Comoy's pipes" with a pic of a 498. I went over to their site and they have some new production 498s and 499s. I find myself oddly tempted even though I shouldn't be. They look pretty good with generally the right shaping. I have the real thing, why want one of these? I do though.

I like the "football shape" Made in France marking, but then again that's where all these shapes originated. For the price, and if I really liked the shape, I wouldn't hesitate to buy one

What's considered "the real thing"? I’ve been thinking about picking up a 499. I'd love to know a bit about the history.

I don't have a lot of history on them anymore, my old sources are gone. But to me the real thing is one of the earlier ones from the 3-piece C era.

I have an early 498 and it is an incredible pipe. My first smoke in it was like a dream. Exactly the pipe smoking experience we all want every time we light up a pipe.

I've handled some of the new Comoy's (French COM) at Cigars International. The quality and hand feel appears to be very good and the ones I saw were drilled correctly. The deal-breaker for me is the acrylic stem. The advertised weight matches up well with my vintage 499 and 498 (now sold).
