Here is a pipe I have with a loose stem. What I did was took aluminum foil (the kind you use for cooking) and wrapped it around the stem and inserted into shank. as you can see by the pic it formed a sleeve. It improved the fit a considerable amount to what it was. It is a stay at home pipe so I call it good Enough!!!

Sorry if pic is bad

Nice ingenuity! I wouldn't have thought of that. I probably would have duct taped the sucker lol

Edit: upon looking online found this vid, think this would work for you?

I had a pipe with a loose stem. I removed the stem, put a pipe cleaner in it, and held it over a flame. After a couple second I pressed it down on the counter. Worked like a charm. I would like to take credit for the idea, but really I made a post similar to yours and some of the guys on here came to my aid.

Try taking super glue and wiping a thin layer inside the shank. Be sure to let if dry before trying the stem. I have used this a number of times for seriously loose stems.

Being very thrifty (cheap ) I am always looking for good repair ideas . Found that over on pipemakers.

Once it has gassed off(about a day) it is inert. I use it a lot in bowl turning for those unexpected cracks or voids that turn up.

One thing I could think of would be a thin coat of clear nail polish on the tenon.

Just build it up slowly and it should be perfect.
