I started off with large, bent pipes, usually of an Italian persuasion. I just liked the looks of them. Then I began to light up occasionally in the car on the way to work--a short 30 minute smoke. Very suitable for breaking in pipes, but not so suitable for large pipes you have to hold while trying to operate a stick-shift.
Around this time I discovered my unsmoked Copenhagen Era Larsen Super 38 Blasted pipe. It is the perfect pipe. 4 things make it so
1. It is super light-weight, yet has a good sized tobacco capacity.
2. It's design hangs perfectly from the mouth.
3. A cleaner goes right to the bowl.
4. It has a wide open draw and smokes like a dream.
This was such a perfect pipe that i changed my entire paradigm on what I collect and keep. I now look for smaller bent pipes that fit all four qualifications. It's a tough search though, because I already have the perfect pipe. I have some others that fit 3 out of 4, and I keep them around, but they will probably only be a permanent part of the collection if they were a gift.
My collection has steadily drifted more bent and more Danish.
I do still have some favorite straights. In particular are 3 Italians--1) a Radice Billiard Twin Bore w/ a twisted stem that was a gift from my wife 2 years ago and smokes like a dream 2) a Radice Silk Cut Poker that is still one of the best looking blasted pipes I've ever seen 3) a Castello Sea Rock Lovat that was 25 years old and unsmoked before I smoked it for the first time a year ago. All 3 of these are superb smokers that get their turn when I can actually relax and smoke. No wonder I love them so much.
