If you smoke too fast all tobaccos taste burned. The slower the smoke the more favors develop. You'll get it..hang in there. :puffy:

I love it!! I can laugh at that now but in January 1966 I couldn't as I was going through the same thing at Ft. Jackson, SC and we had those 9 pound M14's. One heck of a movie, though and it was just like that back then. Thanks for the memories! I hadn't seen that movie in 15 years.
I do need to slow down but it's hard. I want to keep it going and want to see and taste the smoke without lighting half a dozen times. It'll come to me I'm sure.
BTW-I had this beauty to arrive today and it's a real honey.

if I can just get over the hot, harsh taste
Smoke slower, the taste will get less harsh and you can actually taste the tobacco (Sweet Virginia's, smoky Latakia, Peppery Perique, etc...)
humongous amount of smoke going when he first packed and lit up
Pack looser and you'll get a more open draw. Not too loose, not too tight. Practice makes art. But suck on the pipe before loading, then suck loaded. It should be about 70% of it. It it's too tight, dump, start over. You'll get the hang of it.

One of my all time favorites...I'm a huge Kubrick fan. Sad he left us so suddenly, unexpectedly and prematurely. Especially before he could complete the final edit of Eyes Wide Shut (which makes one wonder...).

That's the key-practice. It's just like everything else. I do pack lightly with the first pinch of about 1/3rd of the fill but I think I get progressively heavier as I fill the rest of the way. Maybe too much there but I did find today tamping after the initial light helped and several times afterwards. The video helped with that as did the tutorials I read. Definitely an art to this unlike cigarettes or cigars.
I was a Kubrick fan myself and he sure outdid himself with Full Metal Jacket...still my favorite and R. Lee Ermey did a fantastic job as drill Sargent.
