Taste was Rory Gallagher's old band in the 1960s.

For coarse impressions of flavour, I suppose switching between something like a cherry flavoured tobacco and a latakia heavy would tell you a lot. As time goes by, you could move towards more subtle blends.

Thanks for the responses. I think my mind was right in that I just need to give it more time to pick out the flavors and perfect my pack and draw. Thanks for taking the time to answer newbie questions without being a bunch of smartasses like most forums turn into.
Never fear. We have plenty of smartassness to go around :)
You are correct, people here are really also helpful.

IMHO as a person who is NOT an expert Id suggest getting on Smokingpipes.com and ordering some samples from a few genres. A couple of oz of an English, a Virgina Perique, a Burley and a virginia.

There is nothing wrong with what you are smoking but some cheap pouch tobaccos are goopy, burn hot and when tobacco burns hot it tastes like a garbage fire.

Bulk good tobacco is still cheap but you can eleminate the variable of goopy tobacco. Getting the most flavor out of cheap tobaccos takes more skill than from better product.

I cant say what you will like or not like. At first people generally love or hate English latakia blends. However, you will definitely taste something other than ash tray. My first round with a pipe I hated latakia. When I started again I found I love it.

Anyway, good luck and you will get it. It just takes some time and practice.

I plan to pick one and stick with that a while. my grandfather always smoked sir walter raleigh and it's what I started with years ago.

You may want to skip the Sir Walter Raliegh for now. Production was moved overseas, and the new stuff has issues. I had to throw a can away. Overpowering vinegar smell. I don't know what it tasted like. I didn't dare smoke it.

Been smoking off and on for about a month, try a new type each time trying to see what I like. I can smell the differences but they all taste like burnt tobacco, kinda like an ashtray smells to me. Is this from lack of experience or is it the main taste and the other "flavors" are actually really subtle?
Possibly and also could mean you aren't cleaning your pipe after smoking it. But generally that's from smoking too fast or too hard. I smoke fast but sip instead of puffing and the flavors certainly pop a lot harder and less ashy when you don't over work the tobacco. Leave a burning pipe in your mouth for three to four second and don't draw on it consciously at all. You'll see how little the smoke has to be forced to get into your system.
