Taste Different in a Meerschaum

So far, my pipe collection has consisted of only briar pipes. I recently got a pipe with a meerschaum insert from my dad's collection. It had never been smoked. I had read never to try a new tobacco in a new pipe. So, I chose a tobacco that I had smoked many, many times before. And, immediately I noticed a completely different taste than what I get in any of my other pipes. I would describe it as an almost chemical taste. Is this normal and will it go away with time?

Thanks for the information. I will give it a few more chances and see if it gets better.
Even though it had not been smoked before, I'm sure it had been stored for several years. Does the material in meerschaum perhaps absorb odors like baking soda does?

I only have two meers so I'm far from an expert but both my pipes had a peculiar taste for the first few bowls. I'd say keep smoking it and give it a chance. like any pipe a short break in period is to be expected. Also that is very cool to have a pipe from your dad's collection. Congrats.

as meerschaum is a natural filter, it absorbs the nicotine as it does the other odors.

that why we do not recommend to clean your meerschaum pipes with an alcohol.Because meerschaum absorbs this alcohol too so this affects your smoking experience.
