My personal favorite tampers are the Sheffield pipe knives with combined round point blade, shank poker and tamper. I have quite a few laying around that came as extras in ebay buys.

I have several around, deer antler, pipe nails, Czech tool, and Arthur (pre-magic ring :D ) and those that I have produced.

I use these three primarily:

I have a couple of 16-penny nails and a czech tool. The only other one I have yet is the "Finger of Doom" I made for the tamper swap. I'll be making some more in the future, though.

I use different tampers for different pipes. I really like the pointed end on the Hound's Tooth one Baskerville made and its small girth fits well in my smaller pipes. I really like the plain wood bottom of the Uncle Arthur magic ring tamper, especially when using the pipe he made for me.
Actually, the only tamper I have consistently disliked across the board was part of a multi-tool in the end of a lighter.

I've got several different kinds. Some I made, some are pipe nails of different types, tampers made by others, czech tools and also the ones built into lighters. I also have a nice, still in the box Gerber pipe tool from the 70's probably and a still in the box Sheffield like unclearthur was talking about. (I don't use these two)

The czech tool is my favorite. I like the sheffield just wish the tamper was a little bigger.
