Great tamper Ron, You will find that making tampers is a lot of fun. You will certainly make more.

Okay, I have one made and ready; I need to photograph it and post the pics yet though. I have a second one I'm working on and may or may not get done by the deadline. Should I wait to post the photos until I see if I get the second one done or add it if I do? (I'm hoping to do a "choice" if I get them both done.)

Greg, either route works, but make sure the pictures are posted by Friday afternoon.

Thanks, Winton. Since I'm not sure about number two yet I'll post the first one now.

It is made from a piece of walnut, a scrap from a log I've had curing for a couple of years. I cut it with a coping saw to a rough shape, then used a Vulcrylic file to rough shape it further. Then I used a knife and Dremel sanding drum to get the final shape before hand sanding and buffing it. It is "natural", no stains or dye. Before sanding, I cut a small piece of brass and epoxyed it to the base. I used a grinding stone on the Dremel to get it contoured to the foot. After all the sanding, buffing, etc, I have the entire piece several coats of carnuba wax. To me, it kind of looks like a rifle stock.

Cool tamper Greg! I like the free form shape of it. I can tell in the pics you put some effort into the fine finish. Well done.

I like them all so far but I gotta get me some of that leadwood to try out!

Thanks, Mike. Yes, it took some handwork to get it where I was satisfied. One side had some "pits" in the grain that nearly drove me to the edge trying to get smoothed out! LOL

OK, here is the list. The order is randomly generated by Excel. It took four attempts to make sure that no one is receiving from someone who has already sent a tamper to them from previous exchanges.

Each person will send their tamper to the person below them, with bentmike sending his to Greg on top. Each person is responsible to send a PM to the person they will send thier tamper to. Bentmike, I will send you a PM shortly to get your address. If you give me the address quickly, it will go out tomorrow.
Thanks for the participation guys.

I had too many irons in the fire. I'll hopefully have time for the next one. Can't wait to hear/see all the results.

Well, I mailed out mine today to Ed and bentmike's package arrived yesterday; I opened it today and was plesantly surprised with the contents; the photos don't do his work justice IMHO:

(Mike's beautiful work is shown along side my new Father's Day pipe from my daughter :puffy: )
He also generously included a tin of Mac Baren Virginia Flake, a blend that I've been meaning to try for some time now and get the chance, now, sooner rather than later!
I'm already looking forward to the next "exchange"!

Great photos Greg! Thanks for the kind words -I'm glad you're happy with that tamp. It was hard to give it up for sure. Makes me feel better knowing its in good hands and appreciated.
The other day I got a box from winton and when I got it out of the mail box I noticed it was pretty heavy. Inside was winton's pair of morta tampers but also another very cool surprise was several blanks of wood ready for turning. I can't speak for every wood turner but I love the opportunity to try a new species of wood on the lathe that I never worked before. Thanks winton, very thoughtful. I'll echo whats been said over and over on this forum -What a great bunch of folks.

Mike, I am glad you like the tampers and the wood. As a turner, I have more wood in my stash than I know what to do with. I enjoyed sharing some of the good stuff with someone who will work with it.
Also, I notice that your work area looks like mine.

Got two tampers and a tin of tobacco today from Greg. I may have to buy some larger pipes to use the larger tamper,it's a little big for most of my pipes! Thanks Greg!!

My tamper arrived a day or two ago from metarzan. I noticed a package sitting on the formal dining room table and saw it was addressed to me, I say, "how long has this been here" the reply was " oh I forgot to bring that up for you" LOL. I will get a nice pic of it when I have the chance. I've been quite busy, called in on my days off this week which is good and bad all the same.

I took this pic a bit ago but forgot to post it. This a a very light tamp and am very happy with it. Plus knowing what it was originally is pretty cool.
