Preparing for the tamper exchange (I hope) I am thinking about trying to carve some from stone/semiprecious gems. What tools would I use? Dremel bits?

I hope you are as well!! I have never carved stone but I would think the trusty Dremel could do the trick. Not sure what kind of bit you would use though.

Hope all is well with you too. For the Dremel bits depending on the ardness of the piece you will need diamand tip bits. That being said the polishing kit will be a good thing to get once it is carved the way you want. Be careful of the sanding stones. I have broken a few working wiht Coral. Yes it is not a hard as stone but for using the sanding stone only it is better to carve then sand. Now that I am thinking about it i might try to make one from the coral pieces I have at the house. Thank you for the great idea. Good luck with your tamper.

8)Thanks, Redbeard and grumpy; I'm "getting there".
I appreciate your advice, too, grumpy. I'm going to give it a go as soon as I can. We shall see how the "go" goes ....
