I visited the Tacoma Tinder Box in search of stuff on the STG chopping block. I'd wanted to visit every since I got seriously into cigars (about a year before try pipes), and I was already in the area so I finally got a chance to stop by.

All I found was some bulk Scottish Blend (I've jarred it up and it smells great, you can smell all the components), and Molto Dolce which I didn't get because I'm not a big aro smoker so I figured I'd let somebody else score it. I'd never heard of BRG mixture but I saws it was Sutliff so I went ahead and got it, Tobacco Reviews says it's discontinued and the last review was from 2014 so it looks like I just relieved them of a proverbial shelf turd. I guess it's a VA / Bur which I've been wanting to explore more so I'll be looking forward to trying it especially since the Virginias have at least ten years of age on them. The EMP and Nightcap Match jars were both empty, as were the bulk Plum Pudding and Mississippi River ones. I also got Maltese Falcon which I've long wanted to try, and Gordan Pym which I never had any particular interest in but I've wanted to try Dan so I figured why not? Glad I was able to support GLP and Dan. I intended to get a few Tinder Box house blends but decided not to since I'm short on jars and they're made by Lane so they're likely safe. I'll definitely get some Sherlock's Choice and Philosopher's Blend next time I go.

They also had a tin of CAO Eileen's Dream, two tins of Haunted Bookshop, several of Pirate Kake, and a whole shelf of Peterson Royal Yacht for some reason. I was expecting a much bigger selection, but I'd imagine they do just fine with their storied house blends. It's possible they had more a week ago and stuff was picked clean in light of last Thursday's news. Pipe selection is really good, I didn't pay too much attention because I didn't wan't PAD to kick in while indulging TAD but I did see several Savinellis and Nordings on the wall. There's also a massive selection of pipe racks and a decent sized cigar humidor.

Overall it was a satisfying trip even if it wasn't what I expected.

Sounds like it was worth the trip! Never been to a Tinder Box, but I'll check one out next time we head up to the Seattle area. I just tried Scottish Blend for the first time not too long ago and thought it was great. I think it'll become one of my favorites after some more smokes. I didn't realize they sold stuff like Plum Pudding and Mississippi River in bulk.

Good scores all around. Enjoy the shelf turd.

I didn't either, I would've loved to get those since I'm already cellaring PP and wouldn't mind trying MR. No sense getting tins of those if bulk is available especially with our taxes. I'm really looking forward to trying the Scottish Blend, wonder if I'll regret not buying more. The shelf turd has very mixed reviews on Tobacco Reviews, Jim Inks liked it so I think it'll be worth trying and with ten years of age I'm sure it's better then what the reviewers got. Also the reviews on Gordon Pym are stellar, I saw one comparing it to Frog Morton.

“…so it looks like I just relieved them of a proverbial shelf turd.”

That literally made me spit out my coffee.

It’s hit and miss buying tins at Tinder Boxes. I’ve been to 4 or 5 over the years and only 2 had pipe tobacco stock beyond house blends. But in this day and age, any brick and mortar is a good brick and mortar, I guess.

"Shelf turd" is usually used for whiskeys and beers that don't move often expensive craft ones. Yeah I always figured Tinder Boxes would be much better equipped than what I saw. Of course this is Washington where we have astronomical sales taxes on pipe tobacco (even though cigar taxes are reasonable) and we don't have nearly as many pipe smokers as the South, so it's really not that surprising especially when their house blend line up is solid on its own. It was still a better tin selection than my local has, and you're right any brick and mortar is a good one today. Hell I'm even counting sketchy "smoke shops" that also sell bongs, kratom, and adult DVDs, got my first OTCs from a place like that.

The one at Karric Square in Columbus, Ohio carries lots of tinned blends, Peterson, Esoterica, Mac Baren, Sutliffe HH blends, and several bulk blends from PS. It’s where I get almost all my LTF. They have a great selection and anyone in the area should definitely stop.

I've never found an impressive pipe tobacco selection in any of the local shops in WA. Cigars are another story. But with all the taxation over the years and then the I-901 smoking ban to top it all off i wound up hanging out at the reservations for a decade or so and now buy 95% online, save for the occasional swing through at an old haunt or two.

Go to Smokey Joe's cigar lounge in Fife. That's where the SPC meets and they carry SPC blends there. Discount of you're a SPC member!

It's high on my list. I can't drive so I'll need to find a reason to go to Fife with somebody, I went to Tinderbox because my brother got a Bass Pro Shop card for Christmas so I went with him since they're a parking lot away.
