Exactly they were selling 2021 tins at super crazy prices, little did they know Sutliff had a card up there sleeve and now anybody who wanted it got it and now the are stuck selling there 2021 at almost retail. lol kind of funny if you ask me.
It is funny. And boy, how they are whining now. What makes me laugh harder is that they are blaming "Sutliff" for making too many tins - wtf?

Right, now if Germains would get there act together the scalpers would have to go back to the depths from which they crawled out of.
Now if it's something like mcclelland and it's out of production, or aged significantly I can see a market for that, but selling a 50 dollor bag of 2022 Penzance for 500 bucks isn't fair to the producers the manufacturer or the buyer and seller, if I had to spend that money direct from the supplier I'd rather do that at least it would keep the grower and the seller in business. I'm sure if Mcclelland was selling its stuff at the prices people are getting now they would still be in business,
But then you have the people who complain 22 bucks for a 2 oz tin is too much which is part of the problem also.
If you want cheap low grade tobacco you get what you pay for, I would pay 100 bucks a tin of frog celler if it was going to the people who did all the work for us to have the best quality tobacco possible.

I've been getting my Penzance much cheaper than $50 a bag, thank goodness.

Must be nice , rub it in why don't ya. I can't trade a sasieni 8 dot for a bag no matter how hard I try, it's either that good or just that scarce
Well, it's not that good. It's one of those things where the myth takes on a legend of its own.

My solution is to focus on the tobaccos I can acquire and purchase the more difficult ones at retail when they are dropped. It also helps to have a list of B&M stores that are willing to sell over the phone.

I've never went that far as to call around to different stores. My closest B&M is about 60 miles away, they get it in here and there but they charge 44 an 8 oz pluse state tax which is getting crazy so 50 bucks I consider cheap for now 😆 who knows in another 10 years how much we will be paying just in taxes, I've
learned from the older fellas here to stock up now because tomorrow it may be gone

You have to remember that Germain's is a small boutique operation, producing it's blends on ancient equipment that been around almost as long as the US. That old equipment results in flavors and textures that will change if the line is changed. Could a manufacturer figure out now to get a similar result from newer equipment? Probably, though they would be going through some experimentation to get to that similar result, which would also impact their already stretched delivery capacity.

As for the increase in flippers intervening in the market for Esoterica blends, it's unfortunate, but not surprising. It probably would have happened much earlier if eBay hadn't stopped allowing tobacco to be auctioned on their site. And if someone wants to pay $500 for a label containing a compromised version of what was formerly in the bag or tin that's their right to do so. Buyers of the 2022 aren't buying it because they're knowledgeable. They're buying it because it says Esoterica on the label.

Having sampled a couple of the 2022 releases and finding that the Virginias have been subbed, I see no reason to spend any money on these at normal retail, unless I'm planning to flip them to the rubes. I'm certainly not going to smoke them. That 2021 Dunbar I smoked was just awful, and that's one of my favorites from the line.

Being in the alcohol business, we see this all the time with "unicorn" Bourbons/Whiskies.

Is Pappy good? Sure. It's good stuff. Is it worth what the secondary is going for? Not for me. And I pay for all of my own Bourbon, unless a generous supplier sends me a sample.

Myths and scarcity can wreck havoc on what would normally be "reasonable" pricing.

McClelland, Ecoterica, etc. certainly fall into this category. I really enjoy McClelland Red Virginias, but they are not the end-all-be-all for me. There are literally dozens if not hundreds of great Red Virginias out there, and I've enjoyed a good many of them.

Same goes for Esoterica blends. I've only ever had Penzance and Stonehaven. I really enjoyed Stonehaven and I happened upon a bag a while ago for less than $50, so I'm looking forward to enjoying that blend for a while.

As far as Penzance is concerned, I liked it, but I'm only interested in acquiring it for a buddy of mine that absolutely loves it. I personally prefer GLP Quiet Nights. It clicks better for me and it's available. ALL THE TIME.

Do I like Pappy? Sure. On someone else's dime.

But for my money there are dozens other Bourbons that are available on a regular basis at a fraction of the price that I would put up against any of the "unicorn" bourbons.

That being said, back to the original post.... Cringle Flake has been a constant for me. One of the best Va/Pers out there.

Love it!

I've been into the Yapaneze whisky. Expensive well that's like the bourbon thing as well if i can try the most expensive I will, but will I buy it probably not, it is what it is. The Pokemon scalper game has gone crazy sense early 2019 so I know my fair share of crazy pricing, the tobacco game isn't that bad comparatively.

Have you had Penzance before? If not, DM me and I can send you an ounce. Honestly, I don't like it much. Perhaps apples to oranges, but, I've gone through several cans of Pease blends like Westminster, Gaslight, and Quiet Nights, while completely forgetting I had this bag jarred away.

Never had Pappy, never had William Larue Weller, probably never will. I once paid 350 for a bottle of George T Stagg. Knowing that I contributed to this current scalping market makes me a bit said, and honestly, I hope I have the intestinal fortitude to resist such purchases in the future.

Like you said though, Christmas Cheer, due to it not being produced, is something I'd probably drop 100-150 on, someday. I'm sure, it'll be "good".

I know the feeling I just recently put out a looking for thread and a few pipes to trade and now I'm kinda sad I traded an 8 dot sasieni for a tin of smokers haven krumble cake and something else aged but still in production I forgot the name. Not the biggest latakia fan but man Stonehaven is a gem now to me more then Penzance, don't get me wrong the Zance is still a superb lat blend compared to many but still a lat blend
