SP has Sutliff at 20% off. The Va blends have some interesting reviews from our Best Friend "Reviewer," Jiminks. One of the blends, 507-S, gets this accolade from him, "Stoved Va is my favourite genre of tobacco. With the demise of McClelland." Another Va, 515 RC-1, gets this, "It’s not quite McClelland 5100 - much less vinegar, and it's tangier, but just a little less sweeter - but it is the closest you will get to it." And even the 3 star Virginia Slices 507-C gets this solid praise from him, ". . . An effortless experience that burns a little slow, . . . . An all day smoke that doesn't dull your tongue, and doesn't cost much. . . . " So, does this sale ring your bell (for those of you with a bit of cash and somewhere shy of several hundred pounds of tobak??? :)

No affiiliation with SP nor Sutliff here. And for the record, I just got my box of Pease Va's on the porch today. Not a Sutliff "junkie" (yet LOL!).

Speaking of Sutliff 515 RC-1, I picked this up recently to test the waters of ketchupy matches for old McClelland blends. I'd heard good things about 515, Jiminks gave it four stars!

However smoking it I couldn't get through even half a bowl. It's just hardcore sharp vinegar all the way through. I then tried mixing it 50/50 with 507-s and while the stoved VA helped to add more sweetness or caramel it was still just overpoweringly vinegar. I'm not sure what kinds of ketchup they've got in the pantry at Sutliff but I have a feeling it may just be a mislabeled bottle of pure vinegar!

Does anyone else have experience with Sutliff's 515 and does it mellow out a lot over time? I smoked it nearly right after getting it so I'm hoping it gets a lot better with some age on it. As it stands now though it's definitely not close to a replacement for McClelland Virginia's for me.

Let it dry overnight but enjoy it for what it is. There aren't any McClelland replacements.

I wish people would understand how true that is.

Yes, it does need dry time. I didn't find the sample I smoked to be as vinegary as some others do. I didn't dry it for review either.

Thanks both of you for the tip, it's not really fair to go into it expecting a true replacement. I'll give a bowl's worth a long dry and see if that improves it some.

I guess I'm just looking for something with Ketchup notes but I was getting almost entirely vinegar, hence the 507s mix. Might play around with the ratios, maybe something like 80/20 507/515 instead of 50/50 would be closer to what I'm looking for.

I've had Balkan Sobranie Original match and really enjoyed it. Never tried the genuine, original article (alas, far before my time), so I don't know how it compares.

I'm interested in trying 515, 507-S, Match Sobranie 759, Match Evening, Ready Rubbed Match, Match 20, J4 Burley. I love 507-C, but I just bought some (well, 4 oz, now jarred: maybe that's not enough ...).

Amen, brother. I have been shouting this from the rooftops for years and still the lemmings say "Is this a replacement for McClelland such-and-such"
Let me try once more...

McClelland is over! Get over it! There are no exact "replacements" and there aren't going to be any. So stop asking and move on.

You will live a happier life, and so will your friends who are sick of your pining and whining.

REPEAT! THERE ARE NO McCLELLAND "REPLACEMENTS" AND THERE WILL NEVER BE ANY, AND IF YOU KNEW EVEN THE TINIEST BIT ABOUT TOBACCO BLENDING YOU WOULD KNOW WHY THIS IS.

Thank
you for your time and attention. You may resume sitting in a corner and staring at that shiny pebble.

I'd better stay away from that SP sale. I just took advantage a PC sale on Peterson tins. I controlled myself and only got one each of Irish Flake and 3-P, but my tobacco buying still stays way ahead of my smoking, though I am enjoying a random mix of the last of my tin of Petes RY, some Bayou Night, and some PS LBF, which it turns out is quite nice, surprisingly. All kinds of goodies I'd like from Sutliff, but I'll see if I can control myself. This mix I'm smoking is so good, but I'll refrain from writing a review, since you can't buy it as a blend. I have an unopened jar of Sutliff straight Virginia from long ago I'd like to try one of these days.
