I received some tobacco in the mail yesterday, and I tried out one of the new ones, the Sutliff Match 20 (a blend made to mimic 965). I have regular Peterson 965 on hand and have been smoking it nearly every day for a couple weeks.

I compared the smell of each, and it was certainly similar. I packed the bowl and fired it up and I immediately liked the flavor of the Sutliff. It struck a lot of the same notes for me that the 965 does, in my opinion it is definitely similar. It occurred to me that there is an analogy that I think applies here.

Does anyone else buy the “store brand” (generic) or Aldi version of snacks they enjoy? Once in a while I will find a generic version that I think is the equal or even better than the name brand. However, they are never exactly the same. They taste great and I love the prices, but it is not an exact duplicate.

That is pretty much what I thought of this match tobacco. I enjoy the flavor and it is very reminiscent of the 965, but is not exactly the same. That being said, it is close enough that the price will induce me to keep some around to scratch that 965 itch. I will still be keeping regular 965 as well because I like it very much.

I didn’t put this post in the reviews section because I am not an experienced pipe smoker and I don’t think I have enough expertise, experience, and context to really give an accurate review in a formal sense.

Do you have “generic” (bulk) versions of your favorites that you feel this way about? In particular, I’m speaking about times when you like the match quite well even if it isn’t exactly the same as the blend it aims to copy. I’d like to hear what others think are good “match” tobaccos in this sense.
