Daytime hours should shrink to, say, 48 minutes in the winter time and expand to 72 minutes in summer. So we will get the same number of hours of daylight all year, for everyone everywhere. Easy Peasy.

Of course, the number of minutes to shift will be determined by latitude, so we need latitude time zones as well as longitude ones. And above the arctic circle the number of minutes in the night will be in the tens of thousands in winter. But these are just details, which shouldn’t get in the way of my utopian vision.

Go back and look at the history of all of this and, assuming we're going to stop this nonsense, the choice should be Standard time. But, why not just split the difference and decide on a 30 minute shift?

Sure, nothing will be perfectly correct, except for some of Fall and Spring, then nothing is perfect now, and nothing we do is perfect in any case.
^^^ This… split the hour and stay pat ⏰

At this point, I don't give a fusty ruck, though if a change is made, make it Standard Time.
What I do find obnoxious is the title of the bill. Nothing Congress has done or ever will do will affect the amount of sunshine the world receives. So sunshine doesn't need protection, at least not due to manmade constructs such as hours.

I really dislike early evening dark in November through December, where it feels like 10 p.m. at 7 p.m. And I really dislike getting up in the dark to go to work or otherwise start my day. One argument is that standard time more closely follows the circadian (bodily) rhythms of human beings and reduces health crises like heart attacks and strokes, hence should be the permanent time.

I've come to accept time changes. I like it in the fall when I gain a hour in the morning, and I don't get too badly disoriented with setting the clock forward in the spring, though I can see how it gives many a sort of sleep deprivation hangover.

I think I'm good with time changes, and I could accept standard time on a permanent basis. I remember daylight savings time on a permanent basis back in the 70's, and I don't think it's a good idea.

I hope in EU legislation will also pass in Brussels. If I'm understanding correctly the eastern european countries are not very happy with it, as they have earlier sunrise and sundown compared to western europe, they say its bad for trade for them. Not that i'm very bothered with it, but when the clock moves 1 hour back and I have to work a nightshift its no bueno. On the other hand if the clock moves 1 hour forward its bueno, on average you are not affected more or less one way around.

The name for the act I also found a bit funny, it's like politics are saving you from anything, which is just wrong, but lets not get into that.

All for it but at the end of the day the power lies in the people on this one. If people generally go along with it then it will work. No one really cares if it's officially a certain time they care if they got to their meeting, store, or work on time.

A few years ago the province of Alberta voted whether or not to end clock changing, it was narrowly voted down, most people said moving to permanent DST would be a mistake and standard time should be permanent instead, but the vote wasn't an either/or just whether summer hours should be made permanent.
So the time jumps continue.

Tried this in the 70's, and t was overwhelmingly rejected. I just don't like the idea of sending kids out to stand at the bus stop in complete darkness.

There is always a bunch of bellyaching about the time change, but I just write this off as selfish BS. No one ever seems to take the way other people are affected by things into consideration. Your slight inconvenience with a clock makes me laugh.
