Sunday Picnic Aged Comparison - Side by Side with Pics

I had recently bought a tin of Sunday picnic, the reviews were good and I had yet to try a VaPer with an oriental/turkish addition. One of our forum members had an 8-year-old unopened can for sale so I bought it with the idea of comparing the two. This is also my first aged pipe tobacco and I hope you enjoy reading about my experience as much I enjoyed partaking in it!

The new tin:
The smell is hay, with a slightly sweet note. Nothing over the top but smells like a lot of Va/Per's that I have tried. Firing up a bowl, meh, more of the same. It's not horrible, but I am questioning why I bought an 8-ounce tin. Probably won't make the normal rotation, but it's not horrible enough to pawn off onto someone else.

The old tin:
Boooooom! I am blown away... Dark fruit, raisins, and vinegar. The vinegar subsides once the tin had some time to breathe. This a very similar aroma that I get from King Cake. Smoking this is a dream. Figs, dark fruit, subtlely complex and as I get further through the bowl, just a hit of spicy goodness from the orientals. Virginians heavily moved to the front, but incredibly well balanced.

Thanks for this report!!! Very interesting read. I put a couple of cans on the back shelf a while ago. I thought, if I forget about these -- which I have until seeing your report -- they might reappear sometime in the future as great tobacco. I'll forget about them again.

I tried this not expecting much. My expectations were significantly exceeeded! This is a dandy blend fresh, I can't imagine what it is like with age. Adding to cellar.

I smoke quite a lot of good C&D Virginia blends. Taste is subjective, I'm happy everyone doesn't like it. It would then be like many other Virginia blends, near impossible to obtain.

Yeh, I can't think of a single Virginia that I would prefer over this one. C&D are rocking the Virginias these days. Sure, some I don't like, but the good ones by them are truly the great ones, IMO.

hey I agree! I just think it's insane that all their 5,000 blends are made with 2 single VAs.
I would argue it's 90%+ USA smokers that think it's good.

Do we know much about their Virginia components? For instance: brights and reds are the two and there is no distinction between different crops or sources?

I was all "blech, C&D Virginias" after I had only tried a few, mostly vapers like Bayou Morning... which I still don't like, BTW. But, then after digging through some of their other pure Virginias, I found a gem or two that I wouldn't want to do without.

I believe you.. I just don't want to be a test-money-guinea pig to separate wheat from chaff.

I honestly don't care if people disparage any tobacco I like... I find it amusing C&D fans get so nut-hurt over it.
I think it's because a lot of people know it's true. (low quailty, new leaf)
