Many of my friends in Brazil have lived through a dictatorship, and the effects of that are still being felt today. Recovery takes generations.

Not a single one of them wants a repeat of that. It's a horrific way to live.

I don't think there are many Americans who actually support what is going on, but for those that do, their ignorance of how fragile democracies actually are is a sad thing. These rebel rousers are not going to be successful, but they've shown just how fragile freedom is, in the land of the free.

I can't think of a worse way to dishonour all of the men and women who have fought and worked so hard to maintain freedom and democracy. That people cheer it on and want to see those efforts burn and that sacrifice to be in vain, in the United States no less, is something I never thought that I would ever see.

My sympathies to our American friends here. It is a very sad day for your country.
All due respect: 1 NO POLITICS HERE 2 YOU KNOW NOTHING ABOUT ANYTHING OF WHICH YOU ARE TALKING ABOUT - You aren't American and are being informed by the biased media

. . . 2. Father Dempsey's is really good stuff.

3. Just putting out a hug to everyone today. A brotherly, comforting hug, not a free candy in the back of a 1978 Ford Econoline van with no windows hug.
Gosh I wanted a van in the 70's and early 80's - Ford or Chevy (not trying to start anything :)! Covetous, jealous...;-)). How funny you are!!! :))))

Switching now from Sutliff's Maple Walnut since the bowl is down to just dottle (is that the word?) to another pipe with C&D's Super Balkan and an extra pinch (read "big pinch":) of Stokeybye's Latakia :))). My wife's glad for the room air filter in our sewing/smoking room

Unless deep-fake videos are highly advanced, I am reasonably informed.

I've not mentioned politics. I am merely speaking about the fragility of democracy; party affiliation not required. Violently storming the seat of government in any country has a particular meaning and symbolism. It may be why there is a global shock at this moment. The United States is one of the more prominent symbols of democracy in the world, and an attack on that is shocking, to say the least.

This has nothing to do with which political party you support. Condemning violence and attacks on the seat of democracy anywhere in the world is a natural thing for anyone who values that system of governance, imperfect as it is.

What happened today is not far off from when the Reichstag burned in 1933. All it would have taken were a couple of Molotov cocktails. Someone lost their life today. There are more modern examples, yet you will find those in places where it is sadly expected.

A lot of people have given an enormous amount of sacrifice to ensure the stability of democracy. It is a profoundly sad day when a certain group of people, thankfully in the minority, have forgotten this and trample on their memory. For the sake of the United States and the future of that country, I certainly hope that the reaction to a change in government every 4-8 years is not met with a violent usurping of power, however brief.

At this time, it is just a minority group of hooligans laying waste the the great American tradition. I hope they are not successful in setting a precedent. To say that it is extremely dangerous for every single citizen of the United States is a gross oversimplification, but that's the starting point.

No, I am not American. But I do appreciate any country that values democracy. Long live the U.S.A.

I wish you all the best. Sincerely.

p.s.

It is actually "Bom dia". But Brazilians tend to be a forgiving sort, and your accent would be romantic.

And no, I'm not Brazilian, just in case you were curious.
I am well aware of what I typed- pronounced(some comic relief) so I put it down that way- anyway wherever you are from? you better get off your stance because what's happening now ISN'T NAZI GERMANY - I come from a community that included many Holocaust survivors - They would be informing you that you are incorrect - I cannot talk politics here but YOU ARE MISTAKEN - Stay in your Lane
