Many of my friends in Brazil have lived through a dictatorship, and the effects of that are still being felt today. Recovery takes generations.

Not a single one of them wants a repeat of that. It's a horrific way to live.

I don't think there are many Americans who actually support what is going on, but for those that do, their ignorance of how fragile democracies actually are is a sad thing. These rebel rousers are not going to be successful, but they've shown just how fragile freedom is, in the land of the free.

I can't think of a worse way to dishonour all of the men and women who have fought and worked so hard to maintain freedom and democracy. That people cheer it on and want to see those efforts burn and that sacrifice to be in vain, in the United States no less, is something I never thought that I would ever see.

My sympathies to our American friends here. It is a very sad day for your country.

I spent 30 of the last 32 years as a Protestant Minister, until converting to Catholicism 2 years ago--I'll not mention the actual denomination (my intention to not to start a flame war or insult anyone's church affiliation). Watching the news coverage online this afternoon while I smoked through a Peterson House pipe bowl of Father Dempsey--I found myself wondering if some of the folks I watched were people I had pastored! Remembering many of those people, I'm sad because I often heard inflammatory and hostile remarks even at church! Wow! How sad!! But this is NOT about me, just sharing thoughts--thanks for a good and helpful "place" with great "pipers!" And it feels really good to be together, even though online and not in person.
warm regards to all,
mike
