Well, I got it off. The problem was some residue that was acting like glue. Not actually on the real tenon, but rather on a secondary outer tenon that just recesses in a decorative portion of the mortise. Maybe some plastic or silver polish. Phew! No longer too tight after cleaning it up. How careless....?!!! I can't believe I did that. Won't do it again, that's for certain.
