Stripped brass from stem

I did extensive research on cleaning up estate pipes and found many using oxyclean to de-oxidize and clean out stems.
Last night I tossed my Savinelli stem into a bath of Oxyclean and was shocked to see the paint? brass come off of the stem. It appears to have just been paint, and not a small brass insert like I thought it was. I really wish I had known it was just paint, I would've gone down another path with the restos.
What is the best paint to refinish this?

Sounds like it was a plated base metal or pot metal. Things like this were produced very cheaply everywhere in all forms. Unfortunately, if you removed the plating, then there's not much you can do. You might consider putting a silver one on. There are guys who do this cheaply with ready-made bands that they just slip on, but usually they are used in repairs. You could get someone to make a new band, but then you get into prices that may be more than the pipe's value.

Out of the De Luxe Milano's that didn't have a perspex stem, that's a nice little sliver of brass. Cut one out of a spare stem once.

I am thinking that if it is indeed a Milano, the Oxiclean has just exposed the oxidation over the brass, a little Magic Eraser and Micromesh and it will be shining better than new...

Its a savinelli roma 627, and very much seems to be painted(coming off), but i can have a closer look when I get home from work. Was thinking I could find a decent high end model paint to retouch it with easily enough but wasn't sure if there was a recommended way to go about it.

I have had an Alligator 904 for several years, and the band on it appears to have had some sort of clear coat on it.

It does seem to appear like the brass is just dirty now. I can see a difference in sheen between the stem and where the 'insert' is. Micro mesh pads are arriving tomorrow so I think thats the current plan of attack.

Is the vulcanite rough? If not, a tiny bit of mineral oil rubbed on will show you a nice black stem. Sorry can't advise on the trim bit.

Th micromesh will make short work of that oxidation and make the brass shine like new.

Yep! Though I personally use neither now, both do a fine job.

Micro mesh will remove the black tarnish. No worries, all the older Sav’s like this had real brass. Future reference; Vaseline works as a barrier when soaking in oxyclean. Painted stem logos, brass, etc.

If I remember my 4-to-8 AM watches on the Columbia River Lightship as a young Seaman, one of the jobs was to touch up any of the brightwork (things made of bare brass) that had collected any verdigris (oxidation on brass) that had turned such pieces somewhat greenish.
For that, there was a 1-lb tin of "Never Dull" stashed away in one of the drawers on the bridge.

First three rounds of micro mesh and we're well on our way to restoration. The brass is there, and very much coming back to life. Will the deep black color come back as I go farther along in the process? Still seems to be a muted black and there are noticeable spots of brown still.
