Growing up my Dad had a wondering bone so we moved a lot. My time in the military I did my travels. After that I drove truck over the road and live in my truck. When I decided to settle down with a good woman and have kids I wanted stability for them so we have been in the same house for about 15 yrs. my wife always wants to move but since this place is paid for it’s hard to argue with that

"Are uk prisons nicer than us prisons"

Old School, I have never had the displeasure of experiencing American prisons however I have seen many documentaries about them and the impression I got was the US penal system is much harsher than the UK penal system.

That said, my last visit was circa 1988 and things have changed very much since then. Nowadays cons (prisoners) are allowed TV sets and even Playstations! In my day all you were allowed was an FM radio!

I should point out I have never been locked up for dishonesty or anything 'dodgy', just fighting for my rights/defending myself. Shortest term I served was 3 months (ABH & knife possession) , longest was 3 years (GBH & malicious wounding) with a couple of others in between.

Pretty much just a waste of my time but there you go.

Regards,

Jay.

Never lived long periods, but I’ve lived for a few days, up to a few weeks in some odd ones. Atco trailers, old generator box, cave, old crashed airplane, regular airplane, bivvy bag, a hole in a cliff, under a skiff, among others.

Thanks for the insight and honesty I do not judge but admire a man who lives by a code

I’ve moved a ton in my career, across multiple continents. Just reading this thread so far, I’ve added live on a boat to my bucket list.

Some of my memorable long term lodgings:

-in a Bedouin tent at an Iron Age excavation outside of Petra. Wonderful people with a delicious tea that let me see through time and space. An absolutely wonderful summer. We did smoke a hookah most evenings, but this was right when I took pipe smoking.

-in my own tent for 70 days in the high altitudes
of the Rocky Mountains. Bathe in a a stream, keep an eye out for bears, dig square holes and map them, identify any bones we found. Warm beer and whiskey was the highlight of my evening as I wasn’t smoking (tobacco, at least) at the time.

-out of a backpack though Europe, sleeping mostly on trains and buses or with anyone I could chat up and find a place to crash. I think my favorite place was Prague, but the Balkans were an absolute blast and I had no trouble finding a bed. Salved my need to travel the world straight out of college, and I’m still fortunate to have friends from the adventure.

I’ve moved 11 times since 2012, but I’m currently pretty happy on the 8th floor of a midrise in downtown Dallas. Whiskey bar across the street, grocer on the first floor, 25min walk to work.
