I took a safety razor to Navy boot camp believing correctly that I would be in situations where there was no plug for an electric, and it served me well. I never tried to master the straight razor, though I admire those who have. I try to avoid razor cuts. Have you ever noticed how much women dislike it if you nick yourself? It shakes their confidence in you for some reason. Oh well.
Learning to shave with a straight is just like learning to smoke a pipe - takes time and practice. Yes, it’s a “bloody steep” learning curve, but jut like pipes - nothing better!
Oh, and my wife seems to get more “nicks” shaving legs than I get from a straight razor facial shave...?. I don’t dislike her nicks, and I still have utmost confidence in her!
(all in fun here of course)

Straight razors are called cut throats in the UK for a good reason: they will cause great harm if used incorrectly. And all the honing and stropping can be tedious.

Nonetheless, it is a wonderful to think we are participating in an old ritual...

As for shaving creams and soaps, go for Geo F Trumper, Truefitt and HIll, and Taylor of Old Street. They are old fashioned as well.

I use Dr. Jon's and Mitchell's soap followed by Clubman Pinaud aftershave or witch hazel.

I would also recommend Wet Shaving Products. I've had good luck with their stuff. Soaps and cologne made in Arizona.
