I went pipe hunting today at a couple of antique shops and found no pipes but, found this DURHAM DUPLEX straight razor with box and extra blades. I paid $10 for it, maybe too much...I don't know. Does anyone on the forum use a straight razor or collect them?

It's hard to read in the pic...it states DURHAM DUPLEX in gold lettering.

And for the record, yes, I’m a fan and user...
Straight razors, safety razors, and shavettes. Old School shaving is, in fact, superior to any of the current “modern” 8 blade abominations...
Great find, and great price by the way! Enjoy!

I have been a safety razor user for about 3-4 years now. I thought about asking the forum's thoughts, but after the "show off your beard" thread, I figured that I was in the minority. Definitely a better experience than those overpriced plastic things that they sell now.

I have as many straight razors, safety razors, and shavettes as pipes! Equally badger & boar brushes... Equally soaps & creams!
Razors = pipes. Soaps & creams = tobacco. I do NOT have pounds of shaving soaps & creams however...?
Yep, it’s a thing...?

I don't so much collect straight razors (cut-throats over here) but I do have several made by Thomas Ellin of Sheffield as he was an ancestor of mine.

He held the position of Master Cutler (a very prestigious position) on 2 occasions and his son, also Thomas held it once.

His son founded the 'Footprint Tool Company in the mid 1800's and it still functions to this day.

Regards,

Jay.

Jay, nice little piece of family history there.

I don't think I would trust myself with a straight-blade, especially with two young kids running around. But a safety razor sounds and looks interesting.

The Merkur 34C HD is a great beginner's safety razor. Closed comb and nice weight to the shaving head make it very forgiving.

My current favorite is the open combed 11C. Hard to find since it's discontinuation but worth the search.?

I have a couple I inherited and one of those rather natty ones you break a razor blade in half and insert into the head for shaving. I must look for one of those comb straight razors. I am curious if they accept traditional razor blades or a specially made blade as shown in the link.

Here's a pic of one of the blades. The set I picked up has one used blade, one blade in the razor and 3 new blades in the blade package.

I took a safety razor to Navy boot camp believing correctly that I would be in situations where there was no plug for an electric, and it served me well. I never tried to master the straight razor, though I admire those who have. I try to avoid razor cuts. Have you ever noticed how much women dislike it if you nick yourself? It shakes their confidence in you for some reason. Oh well.

I to collect razors (double edge and straights). Most of my double edge razors are Gillette but like pipes there are certainly some oddities out there like this...

This is a Stahly Stroke Saver that I rebuilt. It has a multi stage gearbox on the inside. You wind it up using the bottom of the razor and the the blade wil oscilate back and forth while you shave. It is more of a vibration and sounds like an electric razor in use. Quite interesting and actually shaves quite well.
