Storing Tobacco on the Go...help!

Ive got a terrible habit of smoking numeroues blends on the go, and I am now beginning to appreciate the difference in taste after the tin has been opened for a few weeks. Now my question is, am I in anyway risking a negative effect by leaving them in the tins once the vacum has been broken, I imagine the round tins (currently smoking Rattrays Terry Red and Petersons Irish Oak) keep better as they have a internal plastic/rubber seal that helps presumably, but I find the Peterson University Flake tin dosnt seem to seal to well. I also have a number of loose bought tobacco's stored in old tobacco tins. Just wanted peoples views on the matter.

Yeah the negative effect is that they dry out eventually. Get some Ball Mason Jars available for like 50 cents a jar at any major store chain. They come in packs of 12 or so, 8oz jars hold 2-3 ounces of tobacco.

Put 'em in jars, and when you leave the house, throw some in a zip plastic bag. If you take more than one, you might want to label it. I do this all the time.

What I have also found to be a workable solution is to get a set of cheap plastic "ziploc containers" or whatever other small plastic fridge containers your local store sells. I put opened tins in those since they don't last me all that long. Yet the plastic container just seems to be good enough to keep the moisture a little more evenly than having the tins just sit on the shelf. I'll try to take a picture of one tonight and post it.
Labeled Ziplocs work great for on the move. I usually have several in my backpack.

Another method advocated by Rick Newcome in his most recent book, "Still Searching For Pipe Dreams" is to double up two plastic freezer bags, take the tobacco out of the tins and store unused tobacco, with a humidor button, in the plastic bags, in a cool environment, indefinately. I have tried both the Mason or Kerr jars and the plastic bages and both bags and jars work well. However, if you want to celler your tobacco for an extended time (more than a few years) your probably better off using the jars.

I bought these at big lots 3 for 1.80 holds 2 oz and it has a rubber seal as well,they do a great job.

I use the Iwan Ries bags, they have a better seal than ziploc bags do. Not exactly expensive either, they're 20 cents each
I also use mason jars.

I store my open tins in tupperware like plastic containers I get at Walmmart. They sell a 4 pack of different sizes and the large one will hold a dozen tins by it self. The 4 pack is somewhere between 5-8 bucks. I have stored tins in there for over 2 months and they are fine. It is the lazy mans way, pop a tin, throw it in the plastic container and no worries about it drying out.

I use static shielding bags from uline . That is actually what iwan ries bags are . But only a fraction of the cost from sites like uline. Not as bulky as jars or containers , and just as effective . Thin , light , can stuff into bag or suite case pockets .

I use bale top jars with a rubber seal for short term storage. For long term I use wide mouth mason jars.
