I'm a Scotch fan. Lucky for me I had a few fellows much older than I whom I respect, and they schooled me in the ways of scotch. Back when the economy was better I had a nice collection of malts from different areas. Nowadays I buy the handle of J&B. the wife and my mom get me single malts for fathers day and my birth day.

Buster, anyway you get them is good. These are all birthday gifts. Also got some Dewer's and Johnny Walker Blue. This stuff is for special occassions. My go to is Famous Grouse; a very nice blended scotch.

My top 2 blends are J&B, Dewers. I have had Famous Grouse and remember it was good. Usually avoid Johnny Walker and Grants. I had a lot to much Johnny Walker at a bachelor party once and well you know, bad memories. LOL

So adding water makes the aromatics come out and it tastes like stronger kerosene? lol When I was a teenager, I hated beer, so I would drink Seagrems VO and ginger ale. I used to love that drink, but over the years I even lost my taste for that.
So if I buy a good bottle of scotch, pour a couple of fingers, add some spring water and I should get to like it? How many glasses do you think it will take? Which Scotch should I go for?

I would start with Glenlivet 12 and add a little water at a time until you like the taste. If you still hate it after a couple tries, send me the bottle :wink:

Cigrmaster, scotch is an acquired taste but if you ever get past your dislike, there is an amazing world out there to discover. A few kilometers apart, different distilleries may have vastly different noses and flavors. Some may argue the point but most agree that true Scotch whiskey only comes from Scotland and different regions of the country produce scotches so different that you wouldn't think they were the same spirit. I prefer Highland malts to Speysides and The MacCallan is a beautiful thing indeed. After you finish the first 1.5 oz glass (at room temperature with about a teaspoon of water added), the first sip of the second should open your palate to the caramel, honey and vanilla flavors imparted from the oak barrels its aged in. We have a store near my house which we call the scotch museum. It has hundreds of them, some 500 dollars a bottle. But I love the single malts, the smoky ones like Laphroig and the smooth sweet ones too. Sock them to me Druid man with your Stonehenge bar.
