I'll be at your door in a week or so zack. Lol, never tried it but it seems it's a very popular blend. Selling out in 4 minutes is amazing... bloody hell be like selling gas barbecues to the Eskimo's

Stonehaven is my #2 baccy and I always have some in my rotation. I don't know where you are getting flavorless but that is why taste is such an individual thing. I wouldn't pay a dime for a Barling pipe but that doesn't make them bad pipes, just not my thing. They are obviously great pipes or they wouldn't have the following they do. Same with Stoney.

There's nothing else like Stonehaven.
I prefer it fresh.
It's a basic monodimensional classic British style dark flake,

and it's the real deal ifya digs that sorta stuff.

I find a lot of flavor- my preferred method is to cube cut it...My lovely wife Greta will almost refuse to smoke anything except Stonehaven...

I get flavorless from the tobacco. Nothing there. And I have a very sensitive palate. I have fallen under the spell of Virginias, except for this one. I would love to experience what others claim that they are getting from this blend. I have a few bags of the stuff that I've picked up over the past year, including several this month. So I'm willing to pop one open if I can get some info on how you treat it before smoking. Do you let it dry before packing? If so, how long? Do you fold and stuff, break it up, fine dice,? Pack normal, light, tight? Chamber shape? Large? Small?
I'd love to hear from folks who love this stuff EXACTLY what they do in terms of prep.
Come on, help me become a believer.

I mix Stonehaven with Mixture 79 50/50. It makes the Mixture 79 last longer, and it cuts some of the unpleasantness of the Stonehaven.

Sablebrush: Maybe you just prefer stronger tobaccos? Anyway, I leave a little moisture in mine, though some people prefer it crispy dry. I feel it loses too much flavor when it's that dry. I cube cut it with my fingers and drop the bits into the bowl, though sometimes I let a few small strips get in there, too. I pack it kind of loose, but not so much that it has trouble staying lit. I puff at a moderate rate, which is my customary way. If you puff like a freight train, you lose some of the flavor. I find it to be a delicate blend that needs a little babying. A wide bowl is preferable, though recently I was smoking it at times in a narrow chambered Peterson Limerick which really seemed to bring out the flavor.
Hope it works out for you. Let us know. I wish I had some to smoke. Can't pay $35 for a bag even if I could get my hands on it.

+1 what JimInks said.
Moist = full on treacle flavor!
Also as he said,

the chosen pipe is crucial,

I have a couple dedicated to the stuff and I notice a dramatic difference (for the worse) when I smoke it in another pipe if that pipe happens to not be able to deliver the eldritch flavours.
Try this:

smoke 5 successive bowls in the same pipe (if that pipe seems to take to Stonehaven, if not, rotate until you find one that may be a better fit) and by the 5th bowl it should blossom!

LOL, Sable. You picked up a few bags of tobacco you find flavorless this month? Thanks for contributing to the hard to get quality of this tobacco.
Hi Sam,
I like to share and I give gifts as several here well know. Sorry if that offends you. Maybe I should try this stuff in a Barling. Might help it. Do you have any tips for prep?

I can't afford the cost of the Mixture 79. But I'll save up my pennies and give it a try.
Hope it works out for you. Let us know. I wish I had some to smoke. Can't pay $35 for a bag even if I could get my hands on it.
PM me your address. Christmas isn't over yet.
Thanks MLC, do you let it dry at all, or straight from the jar into the pipe?

I had been thinking that Stonehaven was a latakia blend. Escioe had sent me a one year old sample, and I loved it, very sweet with an undertone of a casing similar to Peacehaven, but more subtle. To me as strong as ODF, without the back of the throat taste. A very nice, flavorful VaBur. So, I took a chance that none of you had bought out Skip at the Briary, and went ahead and picked up 4 pounds of the stuff just now. I did leave one bag, in case someone might decide to call. Ha ha. If I get tired of it, I may send some out on ebay for the lazy folks that didn't want to pick up a phone. :puffy:

Snooze and lose.

Question: Is anyone willing to part with a bowlful so I can try it?
Thanks

...do you let it dry at all, or straight from the jar into the pipe?
I used to give it a bit of dry time, but I found it's much better straight out of the jar, but, if it's too moist and seems steamy, I'll sit the pipe aside for around 15 mins and come back to it, but usually, it smokes just fine on the moist side and gets a glorious slow smolder going on!
I cube cut mine, the same way that Warrior was all chopped up.
Quite a few people find it boring, especially in a big deep bowl, and I understand that because it is a one-note wonder, and I've read some people prefer to smoke it as a parfait, one I remember in particular was a guy who put Tilbury on bottom and Stoney on top.
I like it the way it is,

from top to bottom!

:!:
I used to keep it in the bag, in case of future financial calamity so I could sell it, but I'm a lousy businessman and that has never happened, now I consider it crucial to immediately rip the bag open as soon as I get it and throw it inna jar - I was lucky to score a bag in this last go round and the batch was A#1 grade trueblue goodstuff the way it's supposed to be - black, black, and black, with generous topping of the yummy yummy black treacle.

I was in the same shop today I was in last week and could have bought most any of the Esoterica blends including Stonehaven and Penzance either visit.

I’ve only had a chance to try a few bowls of Stonehaven (got about one bowl left) and I honestly can’t see all the ‘hoopla ‘over it. That’s not to say I didn’t like it, but it certainly didn’t shake the leaves off of my tree. Then again, I’ve not yet found any tobacco that has done so. Sure, I have certain blends that I really care for more than others and reach for them when I want a ‘special’ treat, as it were, but nothing I would ever lose any sleep over if that particular blend was no longer made much less being difficult to find. Waaaay too many blends that are easily available and comparable to the ones I prefer and that I might in the future find difficult to obtain.
Sure, I would purchase a bag of Stonehaven at a decent price if I by chance I was able to simply ‘click’ and order it online, and yes I’m admittedly lazy in making phone calls to purchase something that I really don’t consider a must have for the sake of having it. Let’s face some simple facts here; if Esoterica did not produce their blends in such small quantities and take away the Internet with the ensuing and endless propagation of their blends being difficult to obtain all of this nonsense would quickly dissipate. I’ve got my ODF, which I find better than Stoneahaven (please, spare me my comparison) as I’m not going to go through that again, but... whatever. However, if by chance ODF disappeared from the market I think I’ll survive and find something else comparable to it or more likely than not something better. Bottom line... considering the plethora of tobacco blends that are easily available I’ll shed no tears. Way too many more important things in life to be concerned about. ;)
