Well let's see-my first impression is I don't get it and not in how hard it is to find. Booker had sent me 6 samples of 2007 aged flakes(plug) to try, Kendal Creme Flake, 1792, Kendal Plug, Dark Flake, Balkan Flake and Stonehaven and of course a sincere thank you for your kindness. Now off to my review.
The Stonehaven was good and I enjoyed it, but I can say the same thing about a lot of blends I have tried so far. I rough cut it, rubed it out a little and gravity filled the bowl and packed it slightly to get just a hint of draw resistance. The burn was smooth, cool and complete to the bottom of the bowl and I have had 3 so far in different sized bowls.
I was able to pick up the woody, nutty tastes and probably due to the burley. There was a slight sweetness and no tongue bite. The mouth feel and smoke volume were good. The aftertaste was good. Now since being new and not very experienced having only smoked a pipe for about a year, I must be too uneducated and not experienced enough to really appreciate this blend as I found it too subtle or if you will mild. And really mild compared to the 1792 I tried the day before. Now not being to much of a burley fan at the present, I could tell it was there but not dominant and I am guessing this has depth and complexity although I just don't get it. I want something more in my blends and this was just too much work for me to "get it."
Now the Balkan Flake really floated my boat so to speak. It was rich , creamy, sweet and spicy and in my perspective a much better blend, far more interesting and I attribute that probably to my Latakia craving.
So all in all it was a very good blend and smoke and if you get the chance to try it please do so. Would I purchase a bag if I get the chance, sure I would for the cellar. Am I going to spend much time looking for it and/or pay anything over retail for it, no. If I had to choose only one blend to smoke in the future it would be Gaslight. I realize the allure of the hard to get blend and I can fall into that trap as easy as anyone, but in this case you won't be in competition with me. If this is your Holy Grail then I wish you well in the pursuit, but for this newbie and Stonehaven, I just don't get it!

I think pipe smokers fit into one of three broad categories: Those who love aromatics, those who love English/Balkan/Oriental blends, and those who love Virginia/VaPer/VaBur blends. Of course most of us will enjoy some selections in each category.
Gaslight is a GREAT smoke. I don't have any on hand at the moment, but it's definitely on my list. Personally, I'm a Va/VaPer/VaBur guy. To me Stonehaven IS my unicorn blend. It is my number one smoke by a pretty good margin. Oddly, I didn't even realize how many people put it on a pedestal. I bought 2 eight ounce bags when I also found 6 bags of Penzance, so I went ahead and bought the Stonehaven. It was almost a year before I even opened it and tried my first bowl. WOW!!! Then I got on here and realized it's as sought after and rare as Penzance. So at least my "wow" impression was formed without even knowing it was perhaps "cool" or "hip" to enjoy Stonehaven.
Given how much you say you like Gaslight, I'm guessing you're an "English" smoker at heart, so I completely understand why Stonehaven is lacking for you.

Yes, I have to say I am an Englsh/Balkan fan for sure. I was previously gifted a sample of StoneHaven many months ago and my impression did not change from that first experience. It just did not wow me and actually a disappointment, I wanted to be impressed but just not to be. But then again everyone's taste's are different and my Gaslight is someone's Stonehaven.

Stonehaven is a finicky PITA. What I didn't see in your description of your prep was how long you let it dry before loading your pipe. Stonehaven will taste of nothing unless it's just short of bone dry. And if it gets completely dry, it tastes of nothing. A number of flakes are like that. FVF needs hours of drying in order to release its flavors. Otherwise it taste like stable hay after the horse is done with it.

"Stonehaven is a finicky PITA" is a good statement. I let it dry where not crispy it still had some spring to it. I will try drying it some more but that's my point, too much work. If I have to be very precise on the moisture content to taste this so called exceptional blend, I will pass.

I'm in that rare camp that, having tried Stonehaven a couple times, don't really understand the fuss. Likely, I need to keep working with it and find the "Sweet spot", but since it costs either my left nut or enough time hunting for it that my family would leave me, I find it not worth pursuing.
I have multiple other tobaccos I have great smokes with, Stonehaven isn't worth the investment. But I'm also the guy the doesn't get his clock rocked by Wessex BCDF so....I am obviously odd.

Yeah, I think Gaslight sucks, and I love Stonehaven. But then, I have put the work into learning how to best prep and smoke Stonehaven, and I have only had a few bowls of Gaslight. I am learning not to judge any tobacco either positively or negatively based on a few smokes- there are just way too many variables in play.

One thing to consider is the strength of the tobaccos you like. If you like anything medium or more, you're likely wasting your time with a blend like Stonehaven. Smokers acclimated to strong tobaccos usually find milder blends don't work for them. It always comes back to what you need to satisfy you, and it doesn't mean a milder blend is bad. It just means it's not right for you.

So true.
I've also found that choice of pipe is crucial for delivering optimum Stoney Haveness!
Some pipes make it flat,

other pipes make it sing.
Find the right one!

Stonehaven is one of my favorites. Smoking it very slow in a smaller, narrow bowl works best for me. I like how it produces notes of wine and cigar that subtly come and go.

Since I wrote this 3 bags fell into my hands and really with little effort and 2 for retail. They are currently in the cellar aging so I have not tried this blend since this posting.
Now at the time of my short review I was smoking cigars also and they were in the medium to full range so as JilLnks states this blend is mild which is probably why it left me wanting. But then while I still smoke cigars I have moved back to mild-medium ones and the milder pipe blends are now satisfying me. One of the reasons I cellared so many different blends from all strength's(if you will) was because I know my tastes change from time to time and I wanted to cover all bases. I really am still so new to this but I feel my cellaring is a plus for the future not even considering cost or availability.

+1 on what Mr. JimInks said. I tried Stonehaven a year ago and have some cellar-ing, I have a lot of other blends that I seem to gravitate to.

I would also agree with Sable that it has an extremely narrow passband. Too moist, not enjoyable, too dry, not enjoyable.

Pirate Kake, Odyssey, Gas light, Old Dog to name a few.

Enjoy your pipe/s, enjoy your tobaccos and enjoy new blends. And enjoy this truly amazing and eclectic forum.

I'm not a fan of Stonehaven to any extent. I've had a few bowls and the rest of the 8oz bag has been cellaring for a year now. Going to be a while before I revisit it.

SH is a good decent flake. I have some in a jar that's about years old now so it's time to visit it again. Frankly, I can't think of one blend that I would chase around the world. Too many options and too little time.

10-15 years ago the Esoterica blends were readily available and I smoked them all. The only one I still keep around is And So To Bed. That one is different enough from any other blend I have smoked.
They are all fine tobaccos but that's it, just fine tobaccos.

Id love to try some of these blends, but sadly my B&M(vancouver based) said they are not able to get these blends in Canada.
