This brings back memories for me. I have a website that shows off my collection of pipes. I'm a collector of Tonino Jacono pipes. Some jerk copied the images of some of those pipes off my site and then used them to try to sell them on ebay. Only way I found out about it, was a friend of mine saw them on ebay and knew I collected his pipes. After a lenghthy phone call with ebay, the listings were removed and the seller banned.
I hope Rick gets his pipe back.

A pipe disappears while it sits on a table full of your friends! Good grief! One wonders how something like that could possibly happen... everybody has seen it and handled it and knows who it belongs to. You'd hope your friends would keep a better eye on it than that if you walk away for a while. :?
I hope it turns up.

This is a shame and is unrepresentative of the community.
That is absolutely true. Brothers of the briar are more often than not just that, brothers. I've posted before, I've had pipe repair men send back the pipes before they were paid for. They did it on faith in their fellow pipe smoker. Almost any pipe smoked I know is thrill to share his knowledge. I've had people I barely know volunteer to help me a pipe show. I've had people give me pipes, tobacco and cigars they had just as a way to share their joy with others. I've joyfully responded the same way with them and others. This is a sad rare incident.

Haunted, I had the same feeling when I got an email from Sterling Tobacco saying he was sending me a sample and told me how he accepts payment after the tobacco arrives. People like that are usually who you would expect to smoke pipes, not greedy thieves that feed on excess; excess and pipe smoking do not go together!

One pipe was reported stolen from the Pre-Show. The only other pipe reported as stolen, by Rick, was in the tent. No pipes were reported stolen from the Mega Center on Saturday on Sunday.
Three lost pipes were recovered and returned during the Show.
I have posted a new thread for the Show's Lost and Found. Three pipes have been found and are awaiting return to their owners. Two other pipes, including Rick's, are still not recovered.
There are also other items in the Lost and Found. Please see the thread Chicago Pipe Show Lost and Found for details.
Please, if you lost, or found, anything at the Show, contact me by email at porshcigar@aol.com . Thanks.

UPDATE: May 22, 2011 - Rick’s pipe has been found.
In an email received today - This is great news!!! After a full week of being lost, I had given up hope that this pipe would ever be found. I have tried unsuccessfully to find this message on the link below. Do any of you have contact info for Bruce, such as his last name, email address or phone number? Thanks — my faith in the camaraderie and goodwill of pipe collectors has been restored, and I liked that pipe more than I was willing to admit.
Bruce was sitting on my right at the table, and he was very generous, offering samples of John Cotton’s No. 1 Mild and Cuban cigars. His pipe bag was giant-sized, so I am not surprised that he did not see my pipe until he unloaded each pipe one at a time.

I knew (well I was a bit skeptical towards our community for a while) that true pipe smokers could never do something like that. I can believe in society again, well a small minority at least.

Whew! I was hoping it would be "misplaced" or something like that and not outright theft.
This reminds me of an incident close to home: Several years ago I allowed a shearing crew to sleep in my barn/pickup garage while they sheared my sheep. While still here, I noticed that my set of Craftsman sockets had disappeared from my (open) tool box. I mentioned it quietly, but luckily I did not directly accuse anyone of taking them. If I had, I would be eating crow. Later I found all the sockets where a big Norway RAT had hidden them, in a dark corner of the barn! It was my fault for leaving the tool box open for the rats to carry off anything they could (that's what they do). I'm glad I didn't jump to conclusions.
(Not my only experience with thieving rodents. )
