Why on earth would someone pay to attend a pipe show only to steal from a vendor? That's just sick to ruin a good experience for a hobby needing growth and good times. Hope they guilt the creep into confessing.

I hope it gets returned. I'm not much of a materialist but pipes are such a unique work of nature and man that I've mourned each one I've lost.

I had heard of 4 separate incidents regarding thefts from tables at Chicago. Two were Friday at the pre-show. This might be one of the ones I wasn't aware of, because I knew 2 of the 4 victims. You would think in a small community like this you'd not be able to get away with stealing a pipe.

People like this bring low to an even lower low..... I hope he/she gets caught and goes away!!
Rick if you see this, I will keep my eyes peeled for your pipe. If I see it, someone is getting knocked out.

Last time I saw one of Rick's pipes it was in the hands of the pretty Mrs. Bubba! Bubba, you better check her underwear/sock drawer for that pipe!

In all seriousness though, that's pretty sleazy to take from a vendor at a pipe show. Drawn & quartered sounds like a suitable punishment...

I dispise a thief more than a liar, but its just a pipe. We here in Bama are still cleaning up 37K homes which have disappeared, and too many lives lost to a disaster. Again, its just a pipe, and to the thief...I hope you choke on it! If its not sold, this butt wipe will someday (hopefully) have to explain to a grandson how he obtained it. Oh the webs we weave!

That's just ridiculous...I definitely hope the pipe is returned and the person is caught.
Incidents like these in our community are even lower, especially knowing that around this community, if you're in real need of a pipe, there are plenty of people willing to go that extra step and gift a pipe, or sell you one cheap.

Terrible to hear. I hope that it turns up and we find that it was misplaced or accidentally picked up by someone.
To offer some contrast to the story, and some hope for Rick. I lost a full bag that very same night, not 20 feet away. (I was a little worse for wear after having a few too many with Bubba...) the bag had 2 nice newly purchased new pipes and 2 tins of unopened tobacco, along with nice quality smoking paraphenalia and some open tobacco. To show that the VAST majority at the show are wonderful and honest people. My bag was found and turned in to security and I was able to get it back the next day. (after quite a bit of panic!)
There is still a chance the pipe will come back to him when someone unpacks a bag and realizes the pipe is not thiers. I hope this is what happens.

My comments are with the article. Thanks, Kevin, for providing the resources of PM.com to get the word out.

Maybe lightning will strike, and pipe and owner will be reunited. Stealing a personal possession such as a

man's pipe is pretty low -- on a par with pet napping.

what will really suck is if someone purchases this pipe from the thief... Thinking you got a legitimate pipe only to have to deal with the blowback were this spotted in public. If the thief keeps it for their own use, how can you truly enjoy a smoke from a pipe you stole?

It seems to me that the sort of person drawn towards pipe smoking for the right reasons (I think it definitely picks us in a less than spiritual, metaphorical sort of way, rather than us picking the hobby as we know it) would inherently be opposed to stealing anything unless for survival. It is a shame!

This does seem like the first year that we've had so many incidents at the show. Very disappointing.
At the Friday night banquet, I noticed a few young young guys dressed like bums going from table to table and snatching up as many of the free Altadis samplers as they could. I'm not suggesting that these guys are thieves; the tables were empty and the samplers were unclaimed, but it was an example of greed that I had never seen at a show before.
