I'm always glad to smoke the bowl to the bottom and dump out only fine white ash. However, I smoke for
the flavor, not for honor points. If the pipe starts to get bite, and become sour, I'm happy to dispose of the
dottle. I don't smoke so much that I am concerned about running out of tobacco, or economizing on it a lot.
I rarely throw away much. The bits of leaf that are left, when there is unburned tobacco, has served as a filter
for the top of the bowl. I'm not interested in picking through the ash to recycle a few bits. Sherlock Holmes
may have had a point; tobacco then may have been relatively expensive, even compared to now. I will sometimes
smoke in increments, and find I can sometimes get two or three relights on what looks like the last quarter of
the bowl, with good flavor. Also, cobs are most likely to burn down to the ash; they are impressive that way.
