How many of you smoke down to the grit, stir the dottle, put your man pants on and smoke the remainder of the bowl until you are sucking ash?
:D

I usually take off my skirt and throw on the man pants somewhere in the first half of the bowl.
But yes, count me in.

If an ashtray isn't handy and I'm down near the bottom and my pipe goes out, I just pack a new bowl on top and of the dottle/ash and light up. Otherwise I just dump it. There's not usually enough to worry about. I smoke a lot of back to back bowls because my pipe is small.

I generally stir and finish it, unless its a brand new pipe, then I tend to just dump it, so as not to risk burning the bottom of the bowl.

Depending on the smoke, and my mood I will either stir the dottle and smoke the entire bowl until I taste the ash, or when I get to the dottle I'll add more tobacco on top and refill the bowl or I just dump the dottle out and move on to another smoke.

It depends on how long I've been smoking that particular bowl. If I'm smoking a flake, and been going at it for 1-1/2+ hours, I'll usually just dump the dottle, unless it's just too damn good to dump! If I've only been smoking a bowl for 25-30 min and still have some remaining in the bottom, and as long as I'm not pressed for time, I'll stir and finish.

Last night I was smoking some Davidoff Flake Medallions, nearly 2 hours in the pipe went out. I was enjoying it thoroughly, so I stirred and finished.

There's just not enough smokeability left in the dottle I dump out ... most often, little more than ash remains and the very small amount of unburned tobacco that occasionally remains has no useful life left in it ...
Relighting bits of dottle would be, for me, like relighting the butts of cigars from the night before ... ugh!
It's not a question of reducing the expense of smoking ... my whole purpose in smoking is to enjoy the experience and firing up dottle or cigar butts would not afford me any enjoyment ... if I were to be reduced to burning dottle and butts or be forced to quit smoking, my choice will be to accept the latter alternative.

I usually smoke a couple of bowls before bed time especially whilst I am trying to break in this Ebay meerschaum I purchased a couple of years ago and left in jacket pocket and forgot about. I have one of those ash trays with the cork in the middle for knocking out a pipe without denting anything. I always stack the dottles up in the left hand corner of the ashtray and use them for my morning smoke. I find a pinch of tobacco for the bottom of the bowl followed by the dottles works just fine for the morning wake up routine especially when imbibed with Turkish coffee - the world is just peachy that way!

I obviously need to man up, because by half way down the bowl I've often had enough. The thought of smoking left over baccy is like saving fag dimps and rolling the leftovers (to me).

I'm always glad to smoke the bowl to the bottom and dump out only fine white ash. However, I smoke for

the flavor, not for honor points. If the pipe starts to get bite, and become sour, I'm happy to dispose of the

dottle. I don't smoke so much that I am concerned about running out of tobacco, or economizing on it a lot.

I rarely throw away much. The bits of leaf that are left, when there is unburned tobacco, has served as a filter

for the top of the bowl. I'm not interested in picking through the ash to recycle a few bits. Sherlock Holmes

may have had a point; tobacco then may have been relatively expensive, even compared to now. I will sometimes

smoke in increments, and find I can sometimes get two or three relights on what looks like the last quarter of

the bowl, with good flavor. Also, cobs are most likely to burn down to the ash; they are impressive that way.

All my scratty ends go in a jar, which gets smoked when I need to smoke something, but arent focusing on the tobacco in the slightest, like fixing up the landy.

Anglesey that sounds like something my Father was rather fond of doing. I remember if I was short of baccy and visiting the parents I was often pointed in the direction of a large white clay marmalade jar and told to help myself!

Once I get to the last 1/4" of the bowl, I may dump it or try to smoke it. But if I forge ahead, I am rarely compensated by even a minute of decent smoking. which is to say that it's not worth it. If I want to smoke more, I should load another bowl, and usually do.
