So basically I'm a complete beginner. I had my first kit arrive today with a simple pipe, a tool and some tobacco to get me started. I took a walk earlier and thoroughly enjoyed the bowl that I smoked. From what I understand you are meant to clean the pipe regularly so I took it apart and was greeted with the stinger. I pulled that out...cleaned the whole thing ang put the stinger back in. The problem is that now the stinger restricts the air flow a lot more than it did before. I can't seem to work out why. I've tried just gently pushing it back in but the draw is still very tight. The thing is i'm not sure i really like the free flowing draw you get with a stinger so want to put it back in. Is there anything that anyone could think that I might do wrong? Thanks in advance.

FYI, most pipe smokers remove the stingers, and meticulous pipe owners file them away to sell with the pipe if they ever sell it. The only stinger I use is part of a screw-on stem in the old Kaywoodie Drinkless series, and though I don't think it improves the smoke, it ends up being less trouble than I feared, quick to clean, and the pipe smokes well otherwise. But stingers are not helpful to most of us. Their reputed moisture reduction isn't needed for most of us. I'd figure out how to enjoy the pipe without it. If the airway is blocked or restricted with the stinger removed, that's a problem in itself not related to the stinger, so address that.

Indeed. Glad you're sorted, and welcome!

Please put your location in your Profile, as people are forgetful.
Why:
That will save questions in the future as to where you live when you later mention local stores, weather, tobacco prices, availability, regulations, location of photos, wildfires, air quality, etc. In many instances that saves time for those who read your posts. It cuts down on posts or PMs asking where you are.
How:
Under your avatar, (top right, left most of three symbols) you choose "Account Details", which brings up "My Account". "My Location" is halfway down. Whatever you're comfortable with- town, city, county, state. province, etc.

Thanks! I'll get that all filled in.

Oh, Are Peterson's known for issues with quality? I'm already eyeing up a new pipe...
Er, well, for some! This statement is extreme flame bait, but since you are new, you are excused!
Folks, no need to repeat yourselves.....

Sorry to waste your time guys. I've just smoked my second one outside and took the stinger out. Once the bowl had tobacco in the draw was fine. I got to say I'm loving this pipe!! :)
we are here to waste time! Please give us as many excuse to waste time and pontificate as possible. If that wasn't what we wanted to do we'd probably get into knitting or something else. Or just smoke by ourselves.

Oh, Are Peterson's known for issues with quality? I'm already eyeing up a new pipe...
Sort of. There seems to be two things going on. One is that all factory pipes occasionally have some issues often not that big of a deal but not really acceptable when spending that much money. There are a lot of petes a lot of them and lot of pete owners. So every time any issue comes up even non issues some people say oh that's typical of them. By the way there are lots of other brands that have the same issues and certain people respond with I can't believe it how could a "blank" happen with that brand.
The second issue is that the company has changed hands a number of times and the quality control at one time seemed to follow the rules of if the pipe doesn't explode before they smoke it then it goes to market. Which is a lesson in why quality control is important. When it slips even for a time that follows a company.
Or that's my take on it. Which is in my opinion a very good guess, but of course I would think that.
