I smoke for my enjoyment and not for what other people think about me. I couldn't give a rats ass what people think. I do what I want and whether they like it or not doesn't affect me one bit.
If they ask me about pipe smoking I will explain some things about it to them, but if they start on about it being bad, are only for old men, etc. I blow them off and ignore them. You are not going to really change their minds on the matter, so why let them influence yours?

I started in college myself, and my first time out in public with one, was met with derision and comments of being too odd, so I kept it to myself for quite a while. Eventually, I was able to develop a "f*ck you" attitude about and with that confidence the derision stopped, as well as the compliments started to come. "Oh that smells nice" "My Dad (or Grandpa) smoked.
I will say that one of the smoke shop's in Boston is not to friendly to the younger generation (even to me now). The attitude towards the younger generation and pipe smoking in this shop is one of "why are you bothering". So there is a stigma out there to a certain extent.

Great replies everyone - I just needed some info to defend myself with, in case the situation ever arose where someone gave me attitude about doing things that I like.

I assume the biggest annoyance would be people suspecting that you smoke something other than pipe tobacco in your pipe.
I have a beard and a respectable age, although I assume I am a youngster on these forums so I'm not really bothered with what people think.

I wonder how many other guys here have daydreamed about some jerk cop thinking he's gonna get an award for nailing you with an ounce of the sticky-icky, only to find out that this twenty-something* is actually smoking tobacco out of that pipe.
*31 today, but who's counting?

The way I feel about it is this: I was a Navy Submariner, we went where no man should go. I sat in a dark room listening to whales make sweet love. Yep, I am a bit screwed in the head. Now I work at a Funeral Home, once again a job that most NORMAL people would not dream of doing. I smoke a pipe and couldn't give a dang what anyone thinks. If they think I am a bit off my rocker they are close to the truth. I feel at ease with my pipe and it puts me in a calming place. I find that pipe smokers in general are a great group of guys and believe in brotherhood. I am glad to be one of you and to hell with what anyone else thinks.

Fredvegas I have thought the same thing before!
This brings me to my story of the day:
I walk into an antique mall, and walk straight up to the three older ladies working the counter, and I ask if they have any smoking pipes. The youngest of the three (60s), looks at me with hate in her eyes and says, "we don't sell bongs here, do we look like that type of place". My response was to pull my pipe out of my pocket and inform her that she was sadly mistaken and has lost at least one customer for life. I turned around and walked right back out...
