If the shank became stiff before you started this process I can only assume that it was flaccid before you started. Lesson learned... never purchase a pipe with a flaccid shank as they just won't perform and give satisfaction.

i've had good results with graphite. Art stores sell full graphite pencils - no wood. Much easier to get enough to coat to lube

Powdered graphite works well, but I have found that beeswax will grab and make a tight fit worse. It's good for loose ones though. In either case they are both temporary but low-impact solutions.
