Back when cigarettes were a quarter and cigars a nickel or a dime, and pipe tobacco 15 cents, my parents were friends with the owners of the Shady Nook Cafe (model for the Shady Rest in Petticoat Junction, as “Uncle Joe” Edgar Buchanan was from Humansville “Hooterville”.)
Even then, all the retail profit in selling tobacco came from rebates.
