Hey Embers, have you smoked Mixture 79 after years in the tub? I’m curious if it still tastes good after 5-10 years.

I am also wondering if Sutliff blends will be produced at the factory they are moving MacBaren to.

I've never bought the tub, only by the pound. Less expensive that way and it goes straight into jars.

Considering how aromatic sales are keeping the pipe tobacco industry alive and how many aromatics are from Sutliff directly or indirectly, this situation may be a lot worse than I was thinking earlier in the thread.

There also have been tough decisions made about the STG/Mac Baren/Sutliff Portfolio which I'm not at liberty to write about. So I'll only post what is publicly available at the moment. In recent months, there has been great uncertainty among the employees at the Mac Baren tobacco factory in Svendborg.

The fate of the factory has been unclear, but now it has been clarified.

After the Scandinavian Tobacco Group (STG) has acquired Mac Baren, it is clear that the factory in Svendborg will be closed by the beginning of 2027 at the latest.

For the employees, however, it still leaves more questions than answers.

According to STG's director, Niels Frederiksen, it is hoped to be able to move some of the approximately 200 employees from Svendborg to STG's factory in Assens.

The decision about the closure was presented to the employees on Tuesday, and the reception was marked by disappointment – but also some relief at finally having a clarification.

The first consequence of the acquisition will be the dismissal of the management team, which will take place within the next eight to ten days. However, it is not only the factory in Svendborg that is affected by STG's new strategy. Mac Baren facilities in the US will also be closed as part of the restructuring.

I’m pretty sure my cellar has every MB tinned offering except possibly Solent. It’s a bummer how this will stifle the boutique blenders but I’m stocked on them too. Am I tempted to make 1 final order to pad my cellar? Yes. But I’m going to refrain, hopefully so the newer enthusiasts can build up theirs instead while the getting is good. Seems HU picked a fortuitous time to enter the US market if one of their main competitors is being pulled from it. I feel bad for the employees but the writing has been on the wall for a while; so it shouldn’t come as a shock.
It’ll be interesting to see how the Chinese pipe tobacco industry evolves once all the vintage and rare stuff has been bought. Will vintage MB be the new Pipestud fodder? Or will China, who already grows a ton of domestic leaf for cigs try to enter the market to provide product for all their pipe smokers?

I am not fond of Mac Baren or Sutliff but this is sad news, especially for the people potentially losing their jobs. I can't help but reflect on what seems to be younger generations taking the money to live the life rather than perpetuating a multi-generational, proud, family business.
