I've found it interesting what people will presume to know about you once they find out you enjoy smoking a pipe. I can't tell you how many people I have disappointed when they realize I don't always wear tweed jackets with elbow patches when I smoke. Generally I'm on my front porch in my pajamas listening to heavy metal when I light up a pipe. So this made me wonder, what pipe related stereotypes have you run into with folks?

I have been told i'm too young to smoke a pipe before when i first started but more often than not i get told it's not often you come across young people smoking pipes. I to am usually in my pj's but when ready to go out i'm in shorts t-shirt and a hoody.

The pipes are for old men stereotype is still pretty entrenched even though more and more younger guys are getting into pipes these days.
I actually want to get a tweed jacket with elbow patches now that you mentioned it.

It is interesting. I have a tweed jacket, dog, shotgun and wear Balmorals! I just find it odd that those stereotypes are so prevalent that people assume that is the sum of your parts because of the pipe in your hand.

I don't remember any stereotypes anyone has tried pushing on me, or suggesting I should fit into with my pipe. I'm usually smoking in my pj's around the house, or lately, in shorts and polo or shirt with a newsboy/derby hat on. When I was working, it was a button up, or polo and slacks most times.

I sleep commando.
If I go outside to have a before bed smoke, people never notice my pipe.
If they do point or stare I assume they think I have a cool looking pipe.

mlaug nice one. Had me chuckling for a bit. Everyone gets the old man stereotype. I even get it from my dear mother. I figure with pipe smoking we are bound to get the curious looks. We have two choices based on the attitude of the person. We can either attempt to educate them or ignore and enjoy ourselves. Not to say I'm a moody cuss but depending on how they approach it, I'll try to correct the stereotype if I can. If we are patient with those who don't understand maybe person to person we can change the opinion of pipesmokers and stereotypes.

It's funny You put this on when You did. 2 days ago I took a walk to the mailbox with My pipe going someone was walking down the road and stopped to smell the pipe smoke and said it reminded Him of His granddad, after talking a bit He said (Funny You have teeth) He said all pipe smokers He ever saw was tooth less and over 80 years old. My mail box is about half a mile down the driveway and I was smiling all the way back to the house.

when i had my teeth out i made them leave the one i marked with a black magic marker so i had it for my pipe. old? cant do much with that. havent bought the tweed yet because i havent found out if they are fire proof whether or not it has the elbow patches. guess i'll just have to keep wearing my welders apron.

as far as what was in my hand, thats personal, i was suprised it could be seen and besides, instead of my wife aging like fine wine she decided to age like milk. a man has to do what a man has to do. so i sleep out on the porch when its raining and a tent when its not..........that way she leaves me the hell alone

Surprisingly I cannot remember any sterotypical comments. But then I am old enough that maybe I just do not remember.

I wonder if anyone has EVER gotten a good response with a comment like that. Snickering and walking away usually works but sometimes I ask for proof of quality. Only one guy has taken me up on the inspection and I was greatly disappointed.

Just been called "the youngest pipe smoker that they have ever seen", it wasnt in spite or anything. made me smile. I dont get anything bad except when i smoke a tobacco in the house and my sister thinks it stinks,(maybe it is those dumb Camels she smoke) and it isn't even an Engish like blend. when i smoke those, no one cares
