I only know 1 pipe smoker in my area and he was the one to steer me towards aros. Im sure my tounge and pride could have been saved a bit had i had some different advice. Live and learn i suppose.
It took me over 20 years to figure them out now I mostly smoke straight orientals and aromatics.

I would suggest you try some simple burley or burley/Virginia blends. The codger blends (Prince Albert, Granger, Carter Hall, etc) are quite good in this category, and have just a slight topping, not like straight-up aromatics. In addition to the codger blends, C&D Pegasus and C&D Briar Fox are worth a try. Both are simple, easy to smoke, and straightforward burley-based blends. There are many more of course, but those two come to mind for someone venturing into burleys.

@Amarkey i'm new to pipe smoking as well and have been buying various blends to try and find the kind of blend i like. Back Down South is one on your list that i have and really enjoy, but is the only pure VaPer i have tried so far. My personal approach has been to try different mixes of kinds of tobacco to get a feel for some sort of baseline enjoyment and then venture more specifically on to similar blends of the ones i like. Below is a list of the blends i have and their make up. The only one i haven't ventured into yet is the HH Bold Kentucky as i've gathered its very strong and i'm working on getting my nic tolerance up. (Anthology was a bit nic heavy for me).

Mac Baren Golden Extra (Burley w/ some Golden Virginia)

Mac Baren HH Bold Kentucky (Dark Fired Kentucky & Bright Virginia)

Mac Baren 7 Seas (orig) (Toasted Cavendish, Virginia & Burleys)

BriarWorks Back Down South (Virginia-Perique)

C&D Anthology (Complex VaPer)

Two Friends Redwood (Sweet Red Virginia, Stove Red Virginia, Perique & Black Cavendish)

GL Pease Windjammer (Virginias, Burleys, Black Cavendish & Perique w/ Rum Topping)

Spaniola's Arrowhead (Burley, Virginia, Black Cavendish w/ some Latakia & Perique, vanilla topping)

Fox Campanile (Viriginia-Turkish)

BriarWorks Unsweet Tea (Virginia, Black Cavendish & Turkish)

C&D Orion's Arrow (Turkish, Perique, Red & Bright Virginia)

Captain Black Royal (Black & Golden Cavendish)

Spaniola's World Champion Winner (Ten different black Cavendishes w/ vanilla topping.)

There are so many varietals and blends its hard to know where to begin. Sometimes i fear having a bunch of stuff i don't like. I've also found that there are variations from bowl to bowl, so i'm trying not to let first impressions cloud my opinion of a blend. Unfortunately i don't smoke more than a bowl a day, so its going to take me a while to sort things. out.

In the semi-rural NorthEastern USA
just get whatever tickles your fancy. Some of the best ones I've smoked came from recommendations but a lot came just from going on feeling and reading what sounds interesting. There is a lot of good tobacco out there waiting to be discovered by you and me and all of us really.

It's hard to judge another's list of blends they want to try. Frankly I'd say try everything you can afford!
But if one wanted to dabble outside of aromatics, I would encourage them to try a tin of Low Country Cooper, a fine loose flake medium English blend from SmokingPipes that would be a nice gateway to the other side.

Funny you mention that cause thats exactly what i have been doing. Also i alsways test draw before lighting. I compare to a thin milkshake and it has worked great. Ive been using the airpocket packing method and its my usual go to now. Also thanks for those recommendations ill look into those as well.
Good for you. Nice to hear your system is working for you. I use the milk shake draw as well.

@AJL67 so far all the blends ive tried that have latakia in them i absolutely love. Not sure how i stand with Burley based blends as those to me just dont seem to taste anything special, could be me though.
