It's strange, but since I started this topic, I'm not as anti stinger as I used to be.
I've found I actually prefer leaving them in one of my Mr. Brog pipes - It just smokes better with the stinger. When I had the stinger out of this particular pipe, it would just smoke too hot.
But, still mostly not a fan of them.

I don't mind stingers. But then I only have them in Old Old (to me) American Pipes. I have fallen in love with Linkman's Grabows and KBB/Kaywoodies. I buy them up when I can get them cheap.
They have yet to smoke badly.
It makes me blanche when I hear about people ripping out stingers on these old birds. Only because to me they are Art.
=)

Stinger? I think they misspelled stinker.
Always pull them out, you'll enjoy the pipe more (IMHO). I purchased one of the Tsuge pipes too and soon as I saw the stinker, I removed it. I always check a new pipe completely prior to its first smoke, so was able to catch this.
The pipe itself is a true bargain, and smokes like a pipe many times more expensive.
On a side note, I just received my Tsuge Ikabana back from Mark Stewart at Pipecraft.org along with my 1925 or older Dunnie. He did a fantastic job and sent a sample of Crooked Lane along to boot!
My Tsuge Ikabana cost substantially more than the one at smokingpipes (12 x) and the bowl had been charred due to a grievious oversight on my part. In my enthusiasm to promote pipe smoking on a cruise, I loaned it to a very drunk individual who managed to scorch the bowl. I learned a lesson that day; never loan a good pipe to a drunken individual. Next time, I'll carry some cobs for that purpose.

I, too, dislike those metal contraptions. Long ago I realized their downsides and removed them. Those that I couldn't (like my first pipe, a Kaywoodie) because they were part of the connection of bit to shank, I sent off to professionals (usually Mark Tinsky) to have a new bit fitted. Yeah, I know I lost any collectable value (whazzat?), but I own my pipes to smoke, not to sell. Their kinda like my guns: I buy 'em and use 'em, don't sell 'em.
