As the title states a friend of mine and me have been talking about starting a pipe/book club in the mayport/Jacksonville area. I need some suggestions on what a good book and blend might be for our first meeting. This should be intresting because between the two of us we only know a handful of pipe smokers. We were thinking having a $5 fee at each meeting to cover tobacco cost. I look forward to hearing everyone's suggestions.

Any of the Sherlock Holmes stories would be good starting reads if you are looking for combining the two subjects.
Then obviously any of the Tolkien books. There is always Fifty Shades of Gray, but that may be for a different type of club.

Just my opinion... I have never been to a pipe club meeting, nor started one, but if I had to bring $5 my first meeting (not even knowing if I'd like it or want to continue) I may not go. Maybe just start out with an "everyone bring your own tobacco and share if you want" kinda deal.
On the other hand, If I had been attending for a while and my club did some kind of "everyone chip in and we'll buy a buffet of tobacco to sample," that seems like it could work well and I'd probably do it in a second.
You could read the Hobbit just in time for the movie! (I have't looked at that book since 7th grade!)

Gray - interesting concept you have of combining pipes and books for a club. You can bag dues if you just have everyone bring their own tobacco. My Morley's Pipe Club does that and has been a strong club for a decade now.

What a great idea... I was a member of CORPS when I was in VA and loved it.
Wish there was any pipe smoking club near me, now that im in CA... but alas I am all alone in my area

I second the Hobbit and LOTR! Great pipe smoking books. Lately, I have been hooked on the Wheel of Time series by Robert Jordan.

Me and my friend decided to read a Sherlock Holmes story for every meeting. I like the idea of bring your own tobacco and bring enough to share. I have never read the LOTR series but with us both being navy picking a large book to start my be over ambitious with are limited time. Hopefully more members will trickle in and we can have a full on club. Now the exciting task of picking which story to read first!
